The Sag Harbor Guide
Published on:

Sag Harbor is the most charming of the Hamptons towns, with its little cottages, the boats lining the waterfront harbor, and, of course, the goop store by the marina. Stock up on beauty essentials, our newly reformulated vitamin C serum is a summer must, and pick up a hostess gift or an outfit for Friday night while you're at it. Walk straight into Provisions, the classic health food store, after a Tracy Anderson class for organic groceries and a smoothie to start your day. In summer, the town is bustling, parking is a sport, and the lines spill out the door at Big Olaf for ice cream (cash only) and BuddhaBerry for fro-yo. We're eagerly anticipating the opening of Babe's Diner, which will serve all-day American diner fare, though we'll always find our way back to Sag Harbor Tavern for that mouthwatering burger. It's the most year-round town of the bunch, with a lived-in, walkable warmth that makes it just as appealing in the off-season as it is in July.
Hotels

Faraway Sag Harbor
Faraway is one of the most anticipated openings in the Hamptons this summer and the only place we'd recommend staying in Sag Harbor. The transformed waterfront property brings a taste of the Amalfi Coast through Zagara, its signature restaurant, while a ground-floor bar and lounge with a lush patio, pool, and terrace all overlook the harbor. Their wellness offerings include a gym, padel courts (launching this month), and Post House leading fitness classes. Situated right near town, you can lounge by the pool, slip into the village for some shopping, and watch the sun disappear into the harbor.
Restaurants

Tutto Il Giorno Sag Harbor
Two-thirds restaurant, one-third boutique, Tutto Il Giorno Sag Harbor is the flagship of the family's southern Italian cuisine paired with Donna Karan's Urban Zen lifestyle brand, all under one roof. The menu is the same as the Southampton location, and you absolutely have to order the Rigatoni (tomato, veal, beef, spicy sausage, peas, and a touch of cream), trust us, it's perfection. It's an easy spot for all ages, and on a long summer night, sitting outside on the patio with a sunset over Sag Harbor is hard to beat.

Babe's Diner
Babe's is a new opening for the summer—an eight seat nostalgic diner serving classic favorites done the Hamptons way: elevated and intentional. The kitchen leans on local produce from Quail Hill and Balsam Farms, putting a twist on staples—the bacon, egg, and cheese comes on an everything-seasoned kaiser roll with candied bacon. Anchored by a single counter for all-day use from breakfast through dinner, it's the perfect casual spot and a family tradition in the making. Occasional guest chef–curated dinners are happening throughout the summer, so watch their website and Instagram. Note: It gets busy upon opening, so make sure to have a backup plan in case the line is out the door (which it typically is). And they do take reservations on Resy for dinner (which we recommend booking).
The Beacon Sag Harbor
While there's no shortage of seafood spots in this corner of the Hamptons, Beacon, open since 1999 and perched above Sag Harbor Cove, is the one to indulge in. The parchment-baked halibut is unreal, and the sprawling patio overlooking the bay is the ideal place to catch a sunset over a long dinner.

Le Bilboquet
The NYC-based French bistro brings its sister outpost to Sag Harbor, where it boasts one of the best views of the harbor and sunset in the Hamptons, plus all the classic French dishes you'd expect. Go for the staples: the moules-frites, the niçoise salad, and the Cajun chicken (it's what they're known for, and rightfully so). Expect a bustling bar, a packed dining room, and a proper scene.

Sag Harbor Tavern
If you’ve been to Sag Harbor Tavern’s Brooklyn sister restaurants, Hometown Bar-B-Que and Red Hook Tavern, you know owner and chef Billy Durney does magic with a cheeseburger, a thick slab of bacon, and ridge-cut French fries. Come here for lunch or dinner, and you’ll see plenty of those burgers walking by, along with fragrant plates of mussels, rock shrimp pasta, branzino, strip steak, and brick chicken. We love it so much that we even featured it in the goop list 2024.
Sen
Good sushi in the Hamptons is few and far between, and Sen is one of the rare classics, it's been around for over 30 years, and for good reason. Located at the end of Main Street in Sag Harbor, the restaurant covers prepared foods, a raw bar, and sushi, and there's almost always a wait and a devoted local following. On a summer night, settling in on the patio for dinner and a long round of people-watching is one of the best things you can do in town.

K Pasa
Mexican is hard to come by in Sag Harbor, which makes K Pasa even more of a find, a refreshingly casual joint (especially by Hamptons standards) that still pulls off perfect margaritas and creative tacos, with options like the steak with bacon jam and crispy shallots and the grilled halloumi with coconut black beans. With a front-row seat to the Sag Harbor pier and those cotton-candy sunsets, plus a buzzy bar, a community table, and surprisingly reasonable prices, it's an easy sell.
Specialty

BuddhaBerry Sag Harbor
There's nothing better on a summer afternoon or early evening than a proper sweet treat, and BuddhaBerry solves that in no time. The Sag Harbor location is the original (with a Southampton outpost since), and it's the one that built the devoted following. The frozen yogurt comes with endless toppings, cookie dough, fresh berries, cereal, gummies, and just about anything else you can think of, which makes it an easy yes for everyone. A true Hamptons favorite.

The Bar at The American Hotel
The Bar at The American Hotel has been a Sag Harbor mainstay since 1849—the spot where locals come for a cozy, old-school drink. The interior is pure classic Americana, and the iconic front porch is the kind of place to settle in for an easy summer drink and people-watching. Inside, the bar remains a quiet, unhurried village favorite, anchored by a world-awarded wine cellar. Not trendy, not clubby—and that's exactly why people love it.

The Green Bar
The Green Bar is the secret rooftop perched above the Sag Harbor Cinema, open daily from 4 p.m. and the perfect place to catch a drink and a sunset, whether you're surfacing from a movie or just looking for a stop between dinner and whatever's next.

Sagtown Coffee
The coffee at Sagtown is reliably good, and everything on the menu can be made iced, making it the perfect pick-me-up at any hour. New this summer, they're launching Sagtown Après: Thursday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m., the café transforms into a laid-back spot for wine, beer, and small plates.

BonBon
NYC-based Swedish-candy favorite BonBon has arrived in Sag Harbor, and Swedish candy really is better, made with real sugar, plant-based colors and flavors, and air bubbles (not gelatin) for that signature bouncy texture. Grab a mixed bag if you're in a hurry, or scoop your own (the pineapple-blueberry skulls are a must). The shop is open until midnight, which makes it the perfect post-dinner detour.

Goldberg's Sag Harbor
Set in the heart of town, Goldberg's is the Hamptons' go-to bagel joint, no exceptions. Popping into their Sag Harbor location for a takeaway bag of bagels is the ideal way to set up a Sunday morning.

Grindstone Coffee & Donuts
Grindstone’s makes great single-origin organic coffee and flavored lattes, but everybody’s here on Saturday mornings for the yeasted donuts, which are light, not too sweet, and unfairly good. Their evergreen menu leans toward the classics, like simple sugar, glaze, or strawberry sprinkle, while specials lean creative or grown-up. (Perhaps you’ll find Boston cream, lavender, or lemon poppyseed.) Don’t come too late in the morning; they sell out fast.

Carissa's The Bakery (Sag Harbor)
Carissa's is a Hamptons staple, and the Sag Harbor outpost is no exception. It's a full bakery and kitchen with a proper coffee bar, plus to-go sandwiches and salads, and a thoughtfully stocked grab-and-go pantry. Worth noting: this location is takeaway only.

Cavaniola’s
Tucked away in Sag Harbor, Cavaniola's is a cheese shop as masterful as anything you'd find in a major city. Since opening in 2004, they've expanded their Sag Harbor footprint to include a highly respected wine shop and a gourmet prepared-foods store, all located right next to each other. Even better, Cavaniola's has a cheese, caviar, and charcuterie ATM that's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Provisions Natural Foods Market & Organic Cafe
Provisions has been in business for more than 30 years, and the place has an old-school health store vibe. They've got a great selection of organic and non-GMO snacks and basics, when you need tofu dogs, gluten-free pasta, and raw almond butter, this is the place to go, plus a produce section that's exclusively organic. It also sells plenty of local produce, if you can't make it to the farmer's market. The cute cafe in the front serves veggie-heavy sandwiches and wraps, made-to-order smoothies, and a pretty insane breakfast burrito.

Big Olaf
Known for their generously sized waffle cones, this old-fashioned ice cream shop is situated right on the water in Sag Harbor. If you're on your way back into the city from the Hamptons, it's likely that your GPS will send you in Big Olaf's direction in an attempt to avoid traffic, which conveniently makes for a happy pit stop. Just note that this is a cash-only joint, and there’s usually a line out the door (but don’t worry, it moves quickly).
Shops

goop Sag Harbor
Our Hamptons outpost is housed in a traditional shingled cottage right on the marina, a bright, beautiful space stocked with goop Beauty essentials and GWYN pieces to wear all summer long. Beyond that, you'll find our curated assortment of swimwear (we're obsessed with Bond-Eye), totes from Rue de Verneuil, AGOLDE shorts, gems from Uniform Object and Spinelli Kilcollin (specifically selected by our team for the Hamptons), and open shelves of Farah Hoimidi and Saie, plus everything else you might need for a perfect Hamptons summer.

Sage Street Antiques
On the outskirts of town sits Sage Street Antiques, a small, longstanding shop with a deep collection of well-priced finds: vintage glassware, plates, chairs, ceramics, and all sorts of other knick-knacks.

Shooster
Set inside an 1840s whaler's cottage, Shooster is a living gallery of fine art, antiques, and rare books, anchored by a research library spanning prose, poetry, philosophy, art, and nonfiction. Owner Lauren Shooster (with a renowned background in image direction) brings the whole space together with a curated mix of objects that reads like a perfectly composed still life. And it is, for the record, deeply chic.

The 1818 Collective
Designers, curators, and shopkeepers Kristin Fine and Analisse Taft-Gersten make hunting for vintage furniture an adventure. Treasures from decades past are brilliantly displayed with modern pieces, art, lighting, textiles, and sweet little somethings that take all the stress out of hostess gifting. And thanks to the ever-evolving assortment and growing event programming, no two visits are ever alike.

TWP
TWP’s second-ever shop, the first is their Lower Manhattan flagship, on Sag Harbor’s main entryway. Come here for supersoft tailored shirts, puddle-hem pants, and elegant evening gowns.

Sag Harbor Florist
Located right next to the goop store, Sag Harbor Florist (also known as Ina Garten's go-to) is the spot for any occasion, whether you're sending an arrangement to a host, orchestrating a tablescape, or just picking up a bouquet for yourself.
Activities and Culture

Sag Harbor Cinema
Sag Harbor Cinema is one of our favorite movie theaters in the Hamptons, it's genuinely clean, has great snacks, and consistently shows premium films (both new and old). The exterior still looks classic and charming, but a fire a few years back meant the inside had to be entirely redone, and we're not complaining, because they did a remarkable job. Special tip: head upstairs to the Green Bar afterward for a rooftop drink.

Sag Harbor Whaling Museum
It might sound dry to include the Whaling Museum on a Hamptons guide, but it's genuinely one of the prettiest pieces of architecture in Sag Harbor open to the public, and a celebration of the town's whaling history. A fun pop-in if you're already walking around the area.

Bay Street Theater
For New Yorkers, there's Broadway, and for Sag Harbor, there's Bay Street Theater. Not exactly a one-to-one comparison, but the seemingly low-key theater consistently puts on fun shows throughout the summer, and draws a real crowd, with the local community deeply involved in everything they do.
Beauty and Health

Forma Pilates
Forma Pilates has become synonymous with challenging, sought-after Pilates. With roots in LA and a loyal, A-list following, it's known for a consistent, results-driven approach. Their Sag Harbor outpost, located within Post House, is a hot commodity, expect it to be fully booked all summer. The classes are pricey, but with the best instructors in the business, the results speak for themselves. A few notes: it's not for beginners, and it's referral-only, but their online classes are open to everyone.

Tracy Anderson Method Sag Harbor
Tracy's newly redesigned Sag Harbor studio sits right on the water, with light pouring in from every angle, a stunning waterfront space on the marina that's also home to the debut of the brand-new RheaMetis Reformer. Open year-round, the studio offers a full summer schedule of her signature classes at all levels: muscular structure, dance cardio, and group MYMODE.

Salon Xavier
One of our favorite go-tos for blowouts all summer long. Xavier has been at this for years, and his year-round salon is a genuinely consistent choice, not as scene-y as some of the others in the Hamptons, but you'll always leave looking better and feel refreshed without the gossipy nature of other salons in the area.

Norma Jean Pilates
For a more classical, balanced approach to Pilates, Norma Jean is the studio to know. Expect to leave feeling aligned, lengthened, and genuinely relaxed, the perfect counterpoint to a busy weekend.

Post House
Post House is a fitness facility built around posture-based training and progressive weightlifting designed to reprogram the body in a way that feels distinctly different from your average gym experience. Members can book private and semi-private sessions or join the high-energy group classes, all led by expert trainers and set to a soundtrack that earns the eclectic, almost-clubby atmosphere it's known for.
