The Lower East Side Hotel That Will Charm Even the Most Jaded New Yorker

There is a version of a New York hotel stay that is purely logistical, and then there is the kind that makes you fall back in love with the city. Nine Orchard is the latter. Housed in the landmarked Jarmulowsky Bank building on the corner of Orchard and Canal, the hotel is what happens when a truly beautiful historic structure is handled with genuine care. The Neo-Renaissance bones, soaring ceilings, marble everywhere, and ornate details that remind you buildings used to be made to last, have been left mostly to speak for themselves. The interiors are considered and unfussy, the kind of space that feels special without trying to tell you it's special.

Nine Orchard tucks a hand-drawn neighborhood map into every room, which comes in handy since the neighborhood is half the reason to come: It's one of the few parts of the city that still has a little grit, and the hotel wears that address proudly.

The Rooms

There are 113 guest rooms at the hotel—ranging from studios to two-bedroom suites—each of which feels more like a chic friend's apartment than a hotel room. I stayed in The Terrace Suite, where two floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a private terrace that is, improbably, as large as the room itself, complete with a six-person dining setup and sweeping city views. We opened those doors and hardly closed them again. It's the kind of space where you actually want to spend time, whether that's a slow morning with coffee or a long afternoon with friends spread across the outdoor furniture, dissecting the night before. Inside, the hotel's signature upholstered headboards, impressively stocked minibar, and custom-made speaker system (programmed with four New York-inspired stations) make it clear that someone thought carefully about every detail. It is cozy and beautiful in equal measure.

The Food and Drink

The Swan Room is the heart of Nine Orchard, and it earns that title at every hour. In the morning, it's reserved for hotel guests—a calm, marble-lined space perfect for a proper sit-down breakfast that sets the tone for the day. The club sandwich at lunch is exactly what you want it to be. Come evening, the room transforms into one of the city's better cocktail bars. The martini program is the main event: you can order bespoke (a dirty gin martini here is taken seriously) or, if you're with a group, go for the Martini Service, where your selection of spirits and accompaniments arrives in a gorgeous golden swan. Add caviar if you're feeling fancy (and you absolutely should be). It is a little theatrical and completely delightful.

For something a little more low-key, the Corner Bar & Restaurant, also in the hotel, is exactly the kind of place you want in a hotel but rarely find. It has the easy, unfussy feel of a French bistro, good food, a great bar, and the sort of atmosphere that works equally well for a casual lunch, an effortless dinner, or a nightcap when you don't feel like going far.

The Neighborhood

Strolling Orchard Street on a sunny afternoon is one of New York's great pleasures. There's a great mix of destination shopping and neighborhood staples: Colbo and Desert Vintage for vintage finds and a cluster of ceramics studios and independent specialty shops. And for an incredible facial, Sofie Pavitt's chic skin care studio is just a short walk away.

The Lower East Side and the edges of Chinatown pressing up against it are also some of the most rewarding places to eat in New York right now. Cervo's, with its seafood-forward menu built on restraint and a handful of really good ingredients, has been a personal favorite for years. (Order the shrimp à la plancha.) For something more casual and equally essential, King's Dumplings in Chinatown serves perfect, gloriously greasy dumplings for cash only. Both meals feel like the real New York, which is the whole point of staying here.

The Experience

The service at Nine Orchard has that quality that's hardest to manufacture: genuinely warm and attentive, without hovering. In a city where hotels can feel transactional, this one feels like somewhere you actually belong. From the hand-drawn map to the way the martini arrives, all the small things add up to a hotel with a clear point of view that executes it with quiet confidence. If you're looking for a New York getaway that feels like a real discovery, even if you've lived here for years, this is it.
