The Jewelry Report: Layering Tips and New Trends
With everchanging sartorial codes and multiple of-the-moment obsessions, there is something to be said for the enduring nature of jewelry. Artful, highly personal, and always expressive, the pieces we adorn ourselves with lend a special touch to any look. This season, we’ve curated an edit of some of our favorite outfit-finishers—from dazzling diamond drops to pretty pendants—plus some fresh ways to wear them.
How to: Master the Neck Mess
When it comes to layering multiple necklaces, length and dimension are key. We love an elongating lariat (like the diamond-adorned one here) mixed in with shorter pieces of alternating length—a two-inch differentiation is ideal. A similarly delicate necklace of abbreviated length works beautifully, particularly when mixed in with pieces of different dimensions and gauges (see the gold chain made from mariner links).
How to: Assemble a Wrist Stack
Building a wrist stack offers ample opportunity for experimentation: Play with texture, and by all means, mix metals and finishes. To keep it looking cohesive, though, pair like with like—chains with chains, bangles with bangles.
The Trend: Diamond Drops
Diamond drops are back in play, with some jewelry designers looking to heirlooms and antique craftmanship to inform their cool, modern takes on the traditional showstoppers. Increasingly, we’re seeing these chic pieces worn with decidedly casual looks, zhuzhing up jeans and a tee to beautiful effect. And if multiple piercings permit? Layer for extra oomph.
The Trend: Pendants
Oversize pendants are having a moment, after popping up on spring runways, where the long, corded necklace was seen swinging over chic shirting and suiting as well as neutral knits and monochromatic eveningwear. We’re wearing ours over crisp white tees and minimalist summer ensembles in order to let these cool conversation-starters do all the talking.
The Trend: Sculptural Silhouettes
Architectural pieces continue to command the spotlight, lending sculptural elegance and organic forms to bold cuffs, chunky rings and geometric earrings. These statement-ready styles lend an artful edge to any ensemble—simply choose your favorite and let it be the focal point.
The Trend: Solo Pieces to Mix and Match
Currently on our radar: small but mighty solo pieces that are delicate enough to slip seamlessly into an ear stack but still pack plenty of punch on their own. We recommend mixing, matching, and layering—just be sure to place dainty studs up high and save the more dramatic pieces for the lobe.
