A longstanding—and long-loved—goop tradition, first with G. Label and now with GWYN, has been to style certain special collections with Cartier. The iconic Maison’s jewelry has made the perfect complement to our design codes over the years, even as we have evolved and refined those codes.

But this year’s GWYN holiday capsule marked a new chapter: Our creative team got to style the occasion-ready collection of elegant dresses, sleek suits, and smart separates with High Jewelry pieces from across the Cartier universe. This is the kind of jaw-dropping, scene-stealing jewelry that takes your breath away. We wanted to know how you go about styling capital-J jewels, so we sat down with goop’s manager of brand styling, Dwight Reeves, to get his behind-the-scenes notes on the shoot.

“This collection is just so good—the designs inspired me to take a more pared back approach. I leaned heavily on GP as inspiration, which meant keeping the styling very clean and allowing the clothes and jewelry to speak for themselves. The pieces I chose from Cartier felt like classic pieces, and also very personal. GP wears Cartier so I really wanted to style the campaign in a way that felt real and sort of specific to her—close to how I see her wearing these looks out in the world.”

“It was GP's idea to layer this necklace over the high neckline. She asked me if we could try it, and it just worked—you have this gorgeous Cartier necklace set against the black dress, and it’s really a beautiful moment for both pieces. It almost feels like the necklace was designed into the dress.”

“One of the things I love about being on set is how the looks can evolve. Take this black cord and pendant: We were originally going to use the pendant on a chain, but we ended up swapping in the cord, which was a little bit unexpected, but the way it works with the top feels so modern and cool, and it also feels very GP.”

“One of my favorites—I love this. It just felt so romantic. It’s such a textural look: You have the sheer silk skirt and top paired with the delicate lace of the bodysuit and then it’s juxtaposed with the tactile weight of these long, intricate diamond, emerald, and onyx earrings. It all comes together so perfectly and tells a beautiful story.”

Just Dropped: Gwyneth’s Premiere Look

Gwyneth debuted this dress last night at the Marty Supreme premiere—and you can shop it now, online and in stores. Cut from a structured stretch satin, the simple silhouette has inverted pleats at the side that lend just the right amount of volume. Dwight’s advice? Skip the necklace—that would be the easy approach. Instead, statement earrings and a sculptural shoe.
