How a Slow Start—and an Unexpected Swap for Ocean Swims—Sets One Australian Beauty Founder Up for the Day

NEADA DETERS |founder of LESSE
Growing up near the beach in Sydney meant two things for LESSE founder Neada Deters: Starting her mornings with a swim in the ocean and receiving a very early education in the importance of daily sun protection. Australian schools have a policy: no hat, no play. “Everyone’s been in that situation when they're six or seven years old, and they have forgotten to pack their hat, and you get put in the shade, and you can't play on the playground,” she says.
“The level of UV exposure you experience in Australia means that the culture there really surrounds this idea of caring for your skin as a central element when it comes to wellness.”
After moving to New York and working in beauty editorial, she noticed a disconnect between that skin-first approach and what was available on the market. “I have very sensitive skin and react to things all the time—every time I walk into a hotel or an Airbnb, I’m nervous. I had terrible hyperpigmentation, cystic acne—you name it, I dealt with it. And one thing that stood out to me was just the lack of innovation and scientific rigor when it came to formulating within the spectrum of natural ingredients,” she says.
When she began developing what would become LESSE, Deters set out to create clinically proven solutions for her own skin using high-quality natural ingredients, while simplifying and elevating the daily ritual of skin care. “That's where the name less comes from: this idea of less is more.”
The rest of her morning routine is just as intentional and simplified as her skin care. She uses just three makeup products and sticks to a few grounding rituals that set the tone for the day ahead, including drinking Chinese herbal tea, meditating, stretching, and journaling. And while her mornings no longer start with a swim in the ocean, the ferry ride from Brooklyn to her office helps her find a dose of Sydney calm.
6:45 a.m.
In our house, mornings are sacred. Throughout my twenties, I prioritized productivity above everything else until an autoimmune diagnosis forced me to rethink my approach to and pace of life. Now, I take it slow and begin the day with meditation.
7:00 a.m.
I see my Chinese doctor every other week for acupuncture, and she creates a custom blend of herbs for me each session. I steep these herbs in water, and this is the first and last thing I consume each day. After a while, I promise you get used to the taste.
For breakfast, I’ll usually have a bowl of locally made muesli with chia seeds, almond butter, and almond milk; or two soft-boiled eggs with Knead Love sesame sourdough and sunflower sprouts. I love to eat my skin care through nutrient-dense, locally sourced whole foods. I also take a number of supplements, including vitamin D, fish oil, and Par Olive collagen.
7:20 a.m.
This is the point when my mind naturally starts to drift to work. While I’m stretching, I’ll review my schedule for the day and make a mental checklist of priorities. Then I spend 10 minutes journaling, just allowing thoughts and ideas to flow.

7:40 a.m.
I like to shower twice a day. In the morning, I’ll use the goop dry brush to exfoliate and stimulate lymphatic drainage before jumping in. I cleanse using the Sangre de Fruta body wash. After the shower, when my skin is still lightly damp, I moisturize with the Kate McLeod body stone. Every other night, I wash my hair with the ROZ shampoo and conditioner; in the mornings I just comb Crown Affair’s Leave-In Conditioner through the ends of my hair.

7:50 a.m.
Then comes skin care, my favorite ritual. I cleanse with the LESSE Calming Cleanser, spending a minute gently massaging my face to encourage circulation before layering Regeneration Mist, Ritual Serum, Awakening Eye Cream, Essential Moisturizer, and finally Every Tone SPF 30. I blend this across my face, neck, shoulders, and the back of my hands.
Makeup is minimal—I like to use a little Tower 28 concealer under my eyes, Westman Atelier cream blush, and ILIA brow gel.
7:55 a.m.
I change and, before leaving, make a quick matcha. By this time, I’m sending off urgent emails and re-reviewing my schedule.
8:15 a.m.
The park around the corner from our home in Brooklyn has off-leash hours every morning until 9 a.m. We take our dog, Alfie, every morning. It’s a brief window of fresh air, sun, and time with my husband—who’s also my co-founder—before we head to the office.
8:38 a.m.
This summer, I started taking the ferry to work. I grew up in Sydney and would swim in the ocean every morning. Though it isn’t quite the same, simply being out on the water gives me the same sense of calm before the day begins.
