Kona-Girl Hair, a Unicorn Mineral SPF, and More Beauty Finds Our Editors Loved in July

Written by:Amy SynnottAura DaviesKylie GilbertElizabeth KimPublished on:

Getting to know the new clean beauty products our buyers bring to goop is one of the (very fun) parts of our job as editors. So, we tend to switch up our rotations regularly, slotting in new launches and turning back to longstanding heroes, experimenting to see how things work for us in different seasons, for different needs, in different combinations. Inevitably, some products start to stand out more than others—and each month, we’re excited to share the ones we’re newly obsessed with.

Ahead, the roundup of our favorite new finds from July.

1RŌZ Wave Texturizing Mist

I was in Hawaii recently, and after canoe paddling one morning, I let my hair air-dry instead of immediately trying to impose order on it. A few hours later, my daughter asked why I didn’t wear it like that more often.

The answer is that my air-dried hair does not normally look like that. It lies weirdly flat at the top, expands toward the bottom, and produces a few bedraggled waves that suggest I have not spent quality time with a hairbrush in days. Hawaii had apparently supplied the exact combination of salt water, humidity, and wind required to make beachy waves actually work on me.

When I got home, it occurred to me that perhaps the problem wasn’t my hair but the products I was putting in it. So, I tried recreating my Kona hair with the RŌZ Wave Texturizing Mist.

Unlike most salt sprays, this formula combines mineral-rich sea salt with red microalgae, giving my hair grip and definition without leaving it crunchy or dried out.

Now, whenever I don’t feel like blow-drying, I shake it well, mist it through my damp hair, scrunch the waves into place, and let everything air-dry. It gives the top some lift, and coaxes the bottom half into actual waves rather than a solid, frizzy hedgerow.

  • Most scented body washes are either trying to wake you up or put you to bed, which is inconvenient if you don’t want a different bottle for every emotional state. I’m not sure exactly what kind of olfactive alchemy is going on with goop’s new shower gel, but it seems to work equally well at both ends of the day. The scent—a grounding mix of black pepper, ginger, sandalwood, and citrus—is so intoxicating I find myself wishing they also made it in a body cream and a perfume.

Lately, in an ongoing effort to make my life (or at least my bathroom) more Zen, I’ve been trying to streamline the number of products in my shower, so I love that I can also use this gentle plant-based cleanser as a bubble bath and a shaving lotion. I’ve tried this before, and most shower gels leave my legs feeling tight or stripped, but the glycerin, aloe, and panthenol in this one leave them feeling smooth and hydrated. And because a little goes a long way, the bottle lasts much longer than you’d expect (so I don’t feel that guilty about using it for shaving).

1Kosas Impressionist Multistick Cream Cheek + Lip Color

I am a very insecure blush user. I think this dates mainly to one super traumatic department store makeover I got in seventh grade; as my friend and I were making our way out through the labyrinth of Saks’s beauty counters, dodging perfume spritzers as we went, the woman at the Clinique counter stopped us with a shrill, “Who did that to you?!” She wasn’t wrong. And she also wasn’t cruel. She pulled us over to her counter and removed the offending shellac and sent us on our way with a layer of moisturizer and a slick of Black Honey—a much more fitting look than the thick-foundationed, fuchsia-cheeked, blue-eye-shadowed one she’d discovered us with.

Point being: I learned early what happens when blush goes wrong. And it made me someone who is always so hesitant with my application that you can barely see it’s there. When I do go a little heavier, I tend to wipe it off almost immediately, worried I’ve overdone it. But a flush of rosy color in your cheeks is undoubtedly one of the most flattering things you can do to wake up your face. So when I uncapped this two-in-one color stick from Kosas I figured it was time to try again. I opted for Intuition, a soft muted pink that looked hard to screw up. Spiked with skin-loving botanicals and CoQ10, the creamy color glides on smoothly but feels lightweight. I dotted it on my cheeks, blended with my fingers, and then dotted on and blended a little more. The color is sheer and buildable, and it melts into skin seamlessly. It gives me just the right amount of pinkness in my cheeks, making me look just a little more alive. And best of all, it feels foolproof—even I couldn’t mess this up.

  • Right around this time of year is when U-pick peach season starts at my local farms. It’s unpredictable; because of the way the fruit ripens on the trees, often there’s just a couple days’ notice that peaches are on. But if you manage to catch them: wow. There’s something about a peach at the peak of ripeness—with its soft, downy skin and sweet, juicy flesh—that feels…voluptuous. Like you want to let the juice drip down your chin and over your fingers when you bite in because somehow it tastes that much better if you do and you don’t care if you get peach juice on your T-shirt because the fruit is just that good. Vyrao’s Ludeaux eau de parfum captures that moment of pleasure in scent form. When you first spritz it on, the juicy peach and warm ambrette notes dominate, before giving way to sweet magnolia and jasmine. Then, as it dries down, it grounds you in a mix of sandalwood, musk, and tonka bean. It is sweet but not cloying—unfolding with enough complexity to defy any preconceptions I had about fruit-forward fragrances (my primary point of reference for said scents is the Body Shop passion fruit face wash I used in middle school, which smelled like straight candy). Like all Vyrao scents, it comes in a sculptural glass flacon that doubles as a pretty objet. And inside, there’s a Herkimer diamond crystal that’s been energized by healer Louise Mita. So maybe it’s not just the scent that accounts for the instant hit of joy and confidence I feel when I spritz it on.

    1Fara Homidi Essential Blonzer Compact

On a recent Tuesday afternoon, a few minutes into joining a Teams call, I received two separate Slacks from coworkers: “your makeup and skin look amazinggg you're glowing haha” and “what is on your cheeks? so pretty.” A third colleague joined the call and immediately announced, “Kylie, you're glowing.” At which point we (obviously) had to pause the meeting to talk about the product responsible: Fara Homidi's new blonzer, which I had applied for the first time that morning. In my 34 years, I can’t remember another beauty product that's earned me so many compliments in a single day.

What makes it so special? Homidi went to great lengths to create three cool-toned shades (mine is Nue) that mimic how skin really looks after a long day spent in the sun, when you may have accidentally gotten just a little sunburned from forgetting that final SPF reapplication. The cream-to-powder formula melts into the skin as easily as my cream bronzer, but with the staying power of my favorite powder blush. And it layers beautifully on top of Homidi's bronzer, which creates the effect of having spent all summer building an incredible base tan.

As much as I love being a makeup minimalist in the summer, I’m now all in on vacation skin—the two compacts haven't left my makeup bag since said Tuesday meeting.

  • 2ILIA Sun Serum SPF 50

In every facial, I always seem to find myself apologizing for my oily-yet-dehydrated skin while my aesthetician is mid-extraction. “Yes, I moisturize.” “Yes, I probably need to drink more water.” In the summer especially, the heat, humidity, and sweat can make it hard for me to know what to even put on my skin when it feels thirsty but greasy at all times.

It turns out, it’s ILIA’s Sun Serum—the brand’s first official sunscreen.

If we weren’t selling it at goop, I wouldn’t have believed it was a mineral sunscreen. The serum sinks in seamlessly, leaving my skin feeling super hydrated thanks to seven molecular weights of hyaluronic acid (they hydrate different layers of the skin). And while the super sheer formula doesn’t add coverage, the two flexible shades magically offset any white cast from the zinc oxide—and it layers beautifully under makeup without any pilling.

When I’m wearing it, my skin never looks oily and never feels dry—it’s the unicorn mineral SPF I never dreamed existed.

    1Nécessaire The Body Wipe

I can count the rainy days since moving to LA last September on one hand. Which means I spend my weekends almost entirely outdoors—reading at the beach, hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains, or biking to the Brentwood Farmer’s Market.

Usually I come home from my sweaty activities and immediately take a really long shower (water bills be damned) using my favorite Nécessaire body wash. The eucalyptus scent is so refreshing, and it makes my skin feel super clean without stripping it of moisture, thanks to the gentle plant-derived surfactants and vitamin- and omega-rich plant oils. But I can’t always come home immediately after a hike or trip to the beach, which is why I was so excited to try these individually packaged wipes, inspired by the body wash, which I could toss in my bag and use in a pinch.

That said, my only previous exposure to wipes was Wet Ones hand wipes, which my mom would strongly encourage us to use growing up. So I was a bit hesitant the first time I wiped this cloth all over my body, thinking it might leave a sticky residue on my skin. But to my pleasant surprise, the wipe removed all traces of sweat and left me with soft, nourished, and subtly eucalyptus-scented skin. They really are like having your favorite body wash in wipe form and now I never leave home without them.

  • Most of the year, my hair is straight and fairly well-behaved, but summer always throws it a curveball. Between the humidity, swimming in the ocean and chlorine-filled pools, and my resistance to using a hot tool, it can end up dry, rough, and frizzy. I also have a habit of showering late at night in the summer and going to bed with damp hair (I know—not ideal or advised), which usually means waking up with random bends and an unpredictable texture in the morning. But Crown Affair’s The Smoothing Air Dry Cream has completely changed the game for me.

I apply it after showering and throw it up in my Crown Affair towel—the only one that quickly dries my hair and actually stays put. As my hair dries, the cream somehow leaves it looking smooth, straight, and shiny by morning. The hydrating formula is rich, yet lightweight—the perfect combination for my thick hair. And it has Crown Affair’s incredible signature scent, a blend of yuzu and coconut.

I’ll definitely keep using this cream into the fall and winter, especially since it doubles as a heat protectant up to 450 degrees when I start reaching for hair styling tools again.
