Dear Jean, Do I dry-brush before or after the shower? With or without oil? How do I know if I’m doing it right—too hard, too soft? How long is optimal? —Jamie N.

Dear Jamie, I love to dry-brush. I made the change after observing the transformation of my cat after we started brushing him every day, and it was a very easy habit to make: It feels fantastic. There are many suggestions on how long to brush—here on goop and around the internet. Our suggestion is three to five minutes, but if I do less than that, it feels good anyway, which, for me,
is the point.

Feeling good should also be your guiding principle in how hard to brush. No excoriating, pressing harder, being overly Calvinistic/no pain, no gain American about it. Just brush—toward your heart, in a circle at your abdomen—so it feels great. Like you’re waking up your nerve endings all over, giving a moment of attention to spots on the surface of your body that rarely get it.

I dry-brush just before I take a shower, and I swear it makes the entire day go
better. It could absolutely be the power of suggestion (in which case, fantastic), or it could be that dry-brushing indeed enlivens the body and spirit. Many people enthuse over its effects on cellulite; if there’s one part of my life that’s particularly unexamined, it’s whether or not I should ever bother to think for one moment about cellulite.

I’m not for dry-brushing with oil. For whatever reason, it gets me thinking about how you’d clean up the brush after oil, and I stop there. Again, though, many people love it with oil.

I brush, I shower with the fabulous new glacial-clay body wash (a mildly foaming, super refreshing, creamy delight), and either smooth on the new scrub or put on oil once I’m out.

Get the dry brush and the body wash together—for an amazing price.
