The Brow Whisperer’s 5
Steps to
Shape
Your Brows
at Home

  1. She’s known as the Brow Whisperer around goop HQ, and her packed Striiike salon in Beverly Hills is famous for feathered brows (full, graceful, natural looking) that flatter any face shape. Now Kristie Streicher (above) is sharing her simple techniques—and easy-to-use essentials—for doing your own brows at home. “Well-shaped, full brows really have an impact on your entire face: They accentuate bone structure and even detract from dark circles and other imperfections in the skin,” says Streicher, who co-owns the sleek brow, hair, and makeup studio with her two sisters.

  2. simple techniques—and easy-to-use essentials—for doing your own brows at home. “Well-shaped, full brows really have an impact on your entire face: They accentuate bone structure and even detract from dark circles and other imperfections in the skin,” says Streicher, who co-owns the sleek brow, hair, and makeup studio with her two sisters.

Streicher fell in love with brows during her first job out of high school, at a makeup counter in Northern California. “Great brows can give pure joy and confidence to people—that’s what I love,” she says. “I’ve been able to build trust and create these really great relationships with my clients. It’s quite special.” To help people create the beautifully natural-looking, softly diffused feathered shape that Streicher’s known for, she’s put together a kit.

  2. Work with Your Natural Shape
    and Arch

  3. Streicher’s feathered brow technique works on every face, and the easiest way to do it yourself, she says, is to let your brows grow out for three to four months to get them back to their most natural shape and arch. “The biggest mistake women make is not finding their own natural arch,” says Streicher. “It’s worth the time to grow them in.”

When your brows have grown in, the idea is to then tweeze the smallest amount of hair it takes to open up the outer arch of the brow. “To do that, draw an invisible line from the corner of the nose straight up toward the forehead; this is where the eyebrow should start. The arch should fall just outside the pupil if you hold the pencil at a diagonal from the outer corner of the nostril,” she says. This move avoids placing the arch too close to the inner part of the brow, according to Streicher: “If the arch is right in the middle of the brow, it leaves you looking surprised.”

  2. Brush On Brow Gel

  3. “I use either tinted or clear brow gel to brush the hairs up and fan them out a bit, which really creates a full look and shows every hair I have,” says Streicher. “I love seeing the hair-growth patterns of the brows. Everyone has a different grain of growth—it can be really identifying.”

  2. Trim Conservatively

  3. “Overtrimming can be just as detrimental as overtweezing. If the hair is cut too short, it can leave holes,” says Streicher, who typically trims clients first, if they need it, before tweezing. “Using the eyebrow spooley brush and scissors, brush hair up and trim only the longer hair that protrudes past the brow line. Cut the hair where it starts to bend or curl. Trim hairs one at a time, staggering the lengths for a more natural look—never straight across or all at once.”

If you have very little natural brow hair, Streicher insists you can train it to grow. “I use growth serum three times a week. I overtweezed in the late ’90s, and I was able to grow it back,” she says. “I also brush my brows daily with a spooley, which I find helps remove the dead skin cells that build up in between hairs to promote healthy growth.”

  2. Tweeze, Don’t Wax

  3. Streicher prefers tweezing over waxing. “It’s the most precise, least irritating way to shape brows,” she says. “Waxing repeatedly pulls at the skin around the eye—I worry that it could lead to premature sagging. And it can make some people break out.”

When you do tweeze, Streicher says to do it in natural daylight while looking into a regular (nonmagnified) mirror. “Fill in your desired shape with a pencil first, then tweeze any hairs that fall outside that shape,” she says. Before tweezing, she likes to massage on a bit of oil—she makes her own Aforé brow oil—to lubricate the hair follicles, which makes the actual plucking easier and less painful. “Hold the brow skin taut with one hand and, holding the tweezers in the other hand, grasp each hair close to the root, pulling sharply in the direction of growth,” she explains. “After tweezing a few hairs, step back from the mirror periodically to gain perspective and prevent overtweezing. After tweezing, apply more oil to alleviate any redness.”

  2. With Great Brows, You Need Less Makeup

  3. “Brows give an immediate result that’s so flattering,” says Streicher. “There’s nothing cooler than a bold brow with either a bold lip or just gently bronzed skin and a touch of mascara. It’s an instant look—youthful, bright, and modern.”
