I’ve needed some self-soothing this week. And to feel that I’m taking good care of my health and my family’s health. These are some products and services that have helped me feel calm and cared for—and able to care for others—in these crazy times. From your morning smoothie to your evening mocktail, I hope these suggestions are useful.

    ONLINE ENLIGHTENMENT

I hadn’t used online resources for meditation, figuring that the TM classes I’d taken had sufficed so far. Likewise for yoga: Years of classes have left me with a pretty good foundation. But trying new things is fun. And interacting—if you can call it that—with someone other than my fiancé during this time of WFH seemed appealing. Someone at work recommended Yoga with Adriene; she has a free YouTube channel. I did a short meditation session with her and a yoga session, both of which I liked a lot.

    CALM

Holy basil is an adaptogenic herb used in the Ayurvedic tradition. It’s taken traditionally for its calming effects and to support a healthy response to stress. Benefits have also been demonstrated for sleep, but it’s gentle enough to take during the workday. I breathe a sigh of relief knowing that it’s there for me when I need it.

    IMMUNE SUPPORT

Sheltering in place doesn’t exactly make it easy to get much sun. And sunlight on skin is where most of our vitamin D comes from. Research has made it abundantly clear that adequate vitamin D is essential to support a healthy immune system and respiratory tract, so this is the vitamin my sons get in every care package.

    SUPER SMOOTHIE

A hefty eighteen grams of plant-based protein comes with 1,000 milligrams of mushroom powders (chaga, reishi, turkey tail, cordyceps, lion’s mane) plus adaptogens. I love that this powder is organic and only lightly sweetened to work in your usual smoothie.

    DELUXE SKIN

Collagen is another smart, neutral-tasting addition to any smoothie. I’m not a kale-smoothie kind of person—I want the fruitiest taste possible. I add collagen to my strawberry, banana, orange juice, almond milk, and almond butter smoothie every day to support my body’s collagen production. I think of it as the deluxe maintenance option for skin and nails.

    TREAT YOURSELF

Fruity elderberry chews for wellness (Perfect Attendance), mint-chocolate chews for sleep (Knock Me Out), and café au lait chews for focus (Nerd Alert). I love all three, so I go for this variety pack. Check out the adorable short videos featuring goop staffers.

    LIGHTEN THE MOOD

I’m one of those weird people who enjoys being outside when the sky is grey. It feels soothing and peaceful, and the fresh air is wonderful even without sunshine. But I know how important bright light is for normal people. My ex once considered moving to Portland, famous for grey skies, which was insanity given the way his mood suffers when he’s sun-deprived. If you’ve ever thought you—or your cranky homebound housemate—might benefit from a good full-spectrum light, now is a good time to find out.

    CLEAN CREW

Scented cleaning products can be overpowering and may contain synthetic fragrances and phthalates. This kit contains six unscented cleaning products from a company promoting sustainability and safety. You’ll get dish soap plus a refill, laundry detergent, hand soap, all-purpose cleaner, and a dish brush.

    MOCKTAIL HOUR

For some who don’t get a nasty hangover, one (or two) cocktails can be a nice way to celebrate the day. I’m jealous of you guys, because I don’t react well to alcohol these days. Even worse, one of its effects is to increase the production of inflammatory cytokines. My favorite mocktail: equal parts pink grapefruit juice, pomegranate juice, and orange juice, shaken with ice, strained, and topped with one or two spritzes of bitters. I like Urban Moonshine Digestive Bitters. Or try a nonalcoholic spirit from Kin Euphorics. High Rhode is energizing, and Dream Light is soporific.
