Good Night’s Sleep

One of the best ways to get a great night’s sleep is to have a bedtime routine. Wellness editor Kelly Martin has a really good one that we’re all a little in awe of—she pays attention to everything from the quality of her sheets to the order of her skin care. “I value sleep so much more than I used to,” she says. To that end, she doesn’t get less than eight hours a night and has her full evening ritual down to a science.

Look Forward to Bedtime
Martin makes her bed every morning, so it’s super inviting when she returns at night. “My life feels more put-together once I’ve made the bed,” says Martin, who believes her sheets—the Signature line from Boll & Branch, made of the highest-quality cotton—make all the difference. “What I sleep on is everything. Start the Night with a Quick Hair Treatment
“When I’m ready to start winding down, I change into workout clothes and smooth the goop hair serum into my hair,” she says. “I put it up in a braid for twenty minutes, and the results are unbelievable. I have fine hair, and the serum gives me more shine and softness, great texture, and even a little volume.”

Stretch, Strengthen, and Foam Roll
While the serum is soaking in, Martin focuses on gentle movement. “I used to have trouble sleeping because my muscles were so tense that I couldn’t fall asleep,” she says. She puts on Bala bangles and does either yoga or light strength training (she likes o-p-e-n.com and Future.co for classes), then finishes with some foam rolling exercises.

Take a Steamy Hot Shower
“I always shower at night,” says Martin. “I love to feel fresh and clean before I get into bed—there’s nothing like scrubbed-down skin against clean sheets. Cleanse
Martin loves a waffle texture for her hair towel, too; she wraps up her hair and then washes her face. “The G.Tox cleanser feels so nice on my skin and leaves it feeling moisturized and totally cleansed,” says Martin. Then she applies one of two face masks. “I’ve dealt with acne for more than twelve years (my skin is a lot more stable now), so I alternate between a blue tansy mask and a detox mask, and they really help. After the mask, I smooth on Tata Harper’s moisturizer for sensitive skin. It’s lightweight and smells so nice—it’s amazing.”

Moisturize All Over
“This body butter is such a treat!” says Martin. “It feels so good after I’ve scrubbed down my whole body—my skin soaks up the moisture.”

Make Tea
“I’m a huge tea person, so I drink a cup of chamomile tea every evening,” says Martin. “I like it with a little honey and a reishi tincture—it’s heavenly.”

Read in Bed
“It’s so relaxing,” says Martin. “Right now I’m reading Michael Pollan’s This Is Your Mind on Plants. I’m a huge fan, and I’m so excited to be reading it finally.” At this point, Martin’s dog starts to get sleepy and wants to snuggle. “He’s not allowed on the bed, but I sit on the floor at the end of the bed and hang out with him before I go to sleep.”

“I avoid engaging with my phone before going to bed—I know how much it affects the quality of your sleep, so it’s a worthwhile effort. But it is an effort.”
