No Matter How Much Coffee I Drink, I Still Feel Wiped Out. Any Clue What’s Going On?
Wendy Lauria joined goop HQ as VP of marketing, but she’s really our voice of reason, the person we go to when we need to test-drive ideas, get unstuck, or just be reassured that it’s all going to be okay. Plus, she makes us laugh. (As does her force-of-nature toddler.)
Dear goop, I know I probably drink too much coffee, but without it, I wouldn’t be able to get through my days. Between work, kids, and life in general, I’m just so tired. Any thoughts on what can help? —Martha B.
Dear Martha, I hear you. I’ve also been so effing tired. I’m a single mom to a two-and-a-half-year-old, I work full-time, and I probably take the “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” approach to life all too often. Like you, and like everyone else I seem to know, I jam a lot into one day…and then when I get home, I try to give everything I’ve got left to my son. Taking care of myself or our house? A true luxury.
I recently moved from NYC to LA, which has upped my general wellness game considerably: I eat well and I exercise…as much as I can. And I try to get at least seven hours of sleep a night, give or take the occasional 5 a.m. wake-up call from my son. But I was still finding myself dragging every afternoon and going for that third latte at 3 p.m. just to get through the day.
Enter goop. When I joined the team, I got a chance to know Dr. Alejandro Junger, who is the founder of the detox gold-standard Clean Program and a trusted health advisor here at goop. He told me that while coffee can be great, when we overuse caffeine, we are essentially whipping our adrenals. And they can eventually get tired of having to rise to the challenge. Dr. Junger worked with us create the vitamin protocol Why Am I So Effing Tired?—it’s based in ancient Ayurveda, to help support balance in an overtaxed system. It’s a daily packet that has six pills in it: a robust multivitamin, a generous dose of DHA (key for supporting brain function), three adaptogenic blend capsules that include powerful herbs like ashwaghanda and holy basil, and a licorice booster. I may chug them in the morning with my coffee, but I’ve managed to lay off the other two coffees I had become accustomed to—and I feel great! Sometimes tired, but not wired. I hope they work for you, too.
