New York, Paris, and London
In partnership with our friends at Akris
Fall in the city can mean many things. For us, it’s all moody foliage, gourds for sale at every market, and: So. Much. Good. Art. Mind-blowing, thought-provoking, and at times, a little disconcerting art. And whether you’re playing tourist in your hometown or hopping on the next train to the big city, these three breakout exhibitions are enough to inspire a day, weekend—hell, even a transatlantic trip. Best to dress for it.

Richard Serra:
Forged RoundsDates:
Now through
December 7, 2019Where:
Gagosian Gallery
-
Art evokes emotion. And no one understands this better than sculptor Richard Serra, whose once-permanent outdoor installation was shockingly removed from Federal Plaza in Manhattan back in the ’80s after being hotly debated for nearly a decade. Not that Serra let that slow him down. Working almost exclusively with heavy metals, the artist brings an equally in-your-face quality to his latest project, Forged Rounds, a robust assemblage of fifty-ton hunks of steel-cut cylinders. It’s massive and mighty and so, so incredible. And if you are as intrigued as we were, weigh in (get it?) for yourself at Gagosian, all through December.

What:
Olafu Eliasson:
In Real LifeDates:
Now through
January 5, 2020Where:
Tate Modern
-
More than a collection of art, Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson’s retrospective at the Tate is a trip for the senses. At times, it’s playful and interactive (think gushing waterfalls and touchable moss walls). Other times, the installations can feel like sensory overload—like when you’re frantically trying to make your way through a foggy corridor. And then the fog starts to change colors. And then you find out the colorful haze is actually made from sugar. Crazy.
There are also the social commentary pieces Eliasson has become known for, like his photographic series on the shrinking ice caps in Iceland. And if the artist-curated vegetarian menu at the Terrace Bar isn’t quite your cup of tea, keep the theme going with lunch at Hixter Bankside (they have a seriously good art collection, too) or scroll through our South London guide for more to-dos in the area.

What:
Bacon:
Books and PaintingDates:
Now through
January 20, 2020Where:
Centre Pompidou
-
You may recognize his obscure and tormented Picasso-like portraits. But have you ever wondered what fueled Francis Bacon’s fire, other than the influential artists who came before him? The Pompidou’s latest exhibit, Bacon: Books and Painting, holds a magnifying glass to the Irish painter’s creations from the end of his career alongside tragic stories from his private book collection. The purpose? To connect the dots between Bacon’s literary heroes, like T.S. Eliot, Freud, and Proust, and the somber works that ensued. It’s dark yet so compelling. You’ll want to dissect all of it with a friend over rooftop drinks at Georges after.
