The Greater goop Awards

“There is within human nature an amazing potential for goodness.” This was just as true when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it in 1961 as it is today. Of course, we get sidetracked. Of course, we read the newspaper, feel despondent, and fail to see an amazing potential for anything, let alone goodness. But what if moments of hopelessness are the exception, not the rule?

Here at goop, we meet people every day who inspire us with their goodness. We talk to them on our podcast, we interview them for our articles, we seek them out in every sphere—and we are blown away by them. There is the twenty-four-year-old man saving the ocean, and there’s the eighty-three-year-old woman saving the ocean. There is the senator taking care of our mothers. The lawyer taking care of our children. The entrepreneur cleaning our skies. The Michelin-starred chef feeding people in need. The ninety-one scientists who taught the world what one and a half extra degrees of warming will do to our planet. Baked into the DNA of goop is the idea that every choice counts. Our decisions affect our health, our families, our environment. We are all part of what Dr. Sylvia Earle, the world-renowned oceanographer, calls our “common chemistry.”

With that in mind, we couldn’t be prouder to announce: The Greater goop Awards. This is the first time we are honoring the great works of the people who are moving the needle toward peace, toward justice, toward a cleaner, more humane world. They are the game changers. They are the ones we are celebrating today and will inspire the future. They are the ones who prove that above all, and within us all, there is amazing potential for goodness.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Unless you’re a massive, successful company, and you can easily hide behind that idiom with few to no consequences. Which is what makes the companies below remarkable: Not only do they blast that certain aspects of their business-as-usual shouldn’t be usual at all; they’re taking significant steps to, well, fix it.
