The New Denim

The New Denim

If the spring shows are any indication, denim is infiltrating just about every clothing category. Some of it is hands-down crazy, and some offer a great update to your knock-around-on-the-weekend skinny jeans. Here, the denim trends we’re buying into, and some tips on making them work with your existing wardrobe.

WIDE LEG

A higher rise and looser fit mean that wide-leg jeans are particularly flattering on those with an hourglass shape. To help balance out the extra volume through the leg, pair with platform shoes and a tucked-in, slim-cut shirt.

Slouchy & Skinny Boyfriend

These are a nice antidote to overly sloppy boyfriend jeans: They are flattering on just about everyone, and work just as well on casual Friday with a blazer and pumps as they do cuffed and paired with sneakers on the weekend.

POLISHED FLARE

When worn with a heel, flares have been known to work leg-lengthening miracles. To tone down the retro vibe, pair with an updated version of a classic military bomber and simple tee.

JUMPSUITS

While we’re huge fans of jumpsuits in general (and think they can be pretty sexy), you don’t want to look like a Top Gun extra. So go ahead and treat it like you would an evening suit or cocktail dress—add statement jewelry, spike-y sandals, and a clutch. And make sure that it fits well through the waist.

Polished Dark Denim

No funny business here—just sleek, well-cut jeans (we’re big fans of the Frame Le Skinny jeans). Approach the styling like you would a classic trouser and pair with a patterned blazer and minimal jewelry.

DETAILED

This generation of embellished jeans doesn’t have a lot in common with their studded predecessors—the details are subtle and not at all in-your-face. Keep the rest of the look relaxed with a no-frills sweater, neutral shoes, and primary color accessories.

DENIM SHIRT

There’s a lot to love about a denim shirt, namely the fact that it’s the perfect counterpoint to pieces that demand a bit more attention—like leather pants, for example.
