Ask Laurie: Walkable Shoes

The Best Walking Shoes

We want to answer your most pressing questions—or, you know, just the things that you’re curious about. Please keep them coming to:, or tweet us @goop. Below, a q for our fashion director, Laurie Trott.

I’m visiting NYC and Ireland in two weeks and being a well-adjusted Angeleno, I am unfamiliar with “shoes for weather” and walking around comfortably. My go-to flip flops and other cute summery sandals are obviously a no-go for Autumn drizzles and castle explorations.

It is with high hopes and aligned stars someone there has the GOOP-worthy answer to stylish, light-weight, great shoes.

Hi Christina,

As a recent NYC—LA transplant, I think I can help you with this.

That time of year, you definitely want to wear closed-toe shoes. We just received some great sneakers from Diemme—they’re technically efficient but are also really in line with the modern sneaker trend.

If you’re looking for something cheap and cheerful, I suggest getting a pair of Adidas Stan Smiths (perfect with jeans, cropped black pants, leather leggings, etc.), Cole Haan penny loafers (a bit more streamlined, and sturdier than a ballet flat), or a hidden wedge heel bootie like this one, which works with tights and dresses. Goes without saying, but break in all three a bit before you head out for the day. Below, more options, including a waterproof sneaker.

Have an amazing trip!
