5 Tailored Pieces Every Closet Needs
Here’s the thing about impeccably tailored clothing: You’ll never regret owning it. Well-fitting trousers will have you looking chicer in seconds, and a sharp-shouldered blazer can take you from feeling blah to badass. If you’re looking to level up your wardrobe, the five pieces below are key pillars to build around.
1
THE (REALLY) GREAT JACKET
There are blazers, and then there are sartorial suits of armor—elevated by modern fits, double-take-worthy details, and rich colors—that make you feel like your most empowered self the moment you slip them on. These are the latter.
2
THE CLASSIC WHITE SHIRT
White button-ups are like good friends in that you can never have too many. We recommend investing in a crisp poplin one for everyday wear, a floaty silk one for dressier events and special occasions, and a subtly striped one for when you want to add interest to your outfit. More of a blouse person? The puffed-and-cuffed top below is one of our favorites.
3
THE VERSATILE PANT
Versatile is in the eye of the beholder: You might want a straightforward cigarette pant in stretch-infused Italian suiting. Maybe you’re more of a wide-leg woman—one who’s happiest when there’s a discernible swoosh in her step. Or perhaps you’re a sartorial boundary-pusher, always the first to try a trend or experiment with a new silhouette. Here, options for every preference.
A STYLIST’S TOP ALTERATIONS TIP
“When getting pants taken up, bring the shoes you’re planning to wear with them the most to the tailor with you,” says goop’s styling director, Sarah Rose. “That way, you can both see exactly where the new hem should hit.” For a standard trouser, Rose recommends just above floor-length; a barrel-leg pant, however, should hit right at the ankle bone.
4
THE IN-VOGUE VEST
This menswear-inspired piece has seen a major resurgence in recent seasons, and there’s no sign it’ll let up anytime soon. A vest makes the perfect polished complement to trousers, of course, but it’s also an easy way to dress up something more casual, like a pair of shorts or low-slung boyfriend jeans. Shapewise, our favorites run the gamut from boxy and cropped to fitted and longline.
5
THE FASHION SKIRT
Gone are the pencil skirts of years past. Here to replace them: swishy tea-length silhouettes in lightened-up hues, a bold micromini made even cooler by utility-minded patch pockets, and a meticulously constructed trouser skirt with thigh-high vents that keep it from feeling too prim.
