Closet Cleanout? 6 Ways to Get Organized

It’s not exactly proven, but we can strongly attest to this: When your closet feels under control, so does everything else around you. So for those of us able to stay home right now, why not make the most of hunkering down and put those idle hands to use? Spring cleaning time, friends.

Take it as an opportunity to tidy your drawers, toss those haven’t-been-worn-in-years tees, and consolidate the stacks of things you’ve been meaning to donate or resell (more tips on that here). Hell, shave your sweaters and color-code your shirts while you’re at it. Even if you can’t work up a good reason to reach for anything other than a stretchy waistband, hear us out: Walking into an uncluttered space where everything is in its rightful place is its own reassuring kind of comfort. And in any case, what’s the harm in bringing a little order to your world? You know, for the days when you do start reaching for real-life clothes again.

    Give Your Tees
    Some TLC

Dig out the shrunken shirts, inspect the threadbare tees, and salvage the band shirts with sentimental value. Then hit refresh. Stocking up on the basics, even in a few colors (looking at you, RE/DONE), is an easy, wallet-friendly update that’ll last you seasons. Wear them to the ground, wash, repeat.

    Sort Your Sweaters

If there’s one category worth revisiting, it’s your sweater stack. Think about it. Video chats? Swaddle up in a sophisticated-looking sweater. Brisk walks with your better half? Cocoon in something soft, like a sweater. Chill evening on the couch? You guessed it. It’s the swiftest way to feel cozily wrapped while looking put together. (Pro tip: Fold them on a shelf to prevent bagging out on a hanger and keep a sweater stone handy for depilling on the fly.)

    Level Up Your Loungewear

Here’s a good rule of thumb: If it’s soft, streamlined, and shifts from a day of clacking away at your keyboard to an at-home sweat session in a snap, it deserves pride of place in your drawer. Separate your loungers into coordinating sets, so you can throw them on and go.

    Underwear, Under Control

To the bras and briefs that have seen better days: We see you. And now, we raise you an all-in-one top-drawer re-up—the kind every lingerie arsenal can surely benefit from. Cop a couple of no-snag bags for washing (The Laundress creates some pretty mesh options) and stash a few lavender-filled sachets around your drawer to keep your underthings feeling extra fresh.

    Denim Drawer Do-Over

For the jean queen: First, sort by style (straight-leg, wide-leg, skinnies…). Next, arrange everything into a wash gradient (think darkest to lightest or vice versa). How you fold is also critical when considering space constraints. We subscribe to KonMari’s method (a good visual always helps), in which everything stacks perfectly upright. Easy to see, easier to grab.

    Sleep Tight

Now’s as good a time as any to streamline your sleepwear. Hang the slinky sets on padded hangers, and Kondo the casual pajamas in a drawer. Then assemble seasonally: Arrange your spring-weight fabrics in the front and keep the heavy-duty flannels on reserve in back. Matching sets have a way of skewing less messy (and your college shirt might appreciate a night off).
