Ask Laurie: Transitional Layering

Dear Laurie, now that it’s starting to get cool out on the East Coast I want to layer as much as possible, but every time I try, the end result feels bulky and looks sort of sloppy. Any ideas? —Anne P.

Like most, your instinct is probably to think in whole-outfit terms—jeans, sweater, and everything that goes under and over them. The easier way to go about it is to pick a single anchor piece to focus on, then build the additional layers around that. For example, a plaid button-down is a cozy fall staple, and naturally, a great place to start. To keep things from getting messy, layer with structured pieces like slim-cut pants and a tailored peacoat (I’m a big fan of lending extra warmth by way of scarves and hats). Below are a few outfit options to get you started.
