Ask Laurie: How Do You Pull Off a Monochromatic Look?

Dear Laurie, How do you pull off monochromatic dressing or a winter white outfit? – E.L.

I love the challenge of styling within one color family because it opens up a world of opportunity to incorporate nuances that’ll make the outfit stand out. One approach is to play with texture: Mix a chunky knit with a tailored piece that has a prominent texture, such as boucle or corduroy. Now, if you’re going for a head-to-toe look, start with a foundation of off-white or cream hero pieces—in this case, it’s a feminine sweater and fluid culottes—then build around that with crisp white and metallic accents. Another useful trick, as suggested by Lou & Grey stylist and collaborator Alana Hadid, is to layer various lengths and proportions to achieve a multi-dimensional look. “When the colors are all similar, adding a long coat or knee-skimming vest can make all the difference in pulling an outfit together. Top with an oversized scarf or bandana and you’re done!”
