Dear Anne, I tend to shy away from buying anything asymmetrical, but I love how it looks on other people! Any tips on how to wear it?—Julie B.
Dear Julie, Asymmetrical pieces can be daunting. One wrong turn and the look is wearing you. But trust me, a beautifully cut asymmetrical piece can really lift you out of a boring outfit rut. Asymmetry can create a modern and striking silhouette, and even the most subtle of asymmetrical details can elevate your look into something special. Below, some tips to embracing the trend:
“Pair a little bit of asymmetry with a lot.”
During the day, you can get playful by adding a graphic print into the mix—this printed blouse looks just right with a poplin skirt that skims the top of the knee. The beauty of asymmetry is that it really makes the the whole sexy-without-trying-too-hard thing pretty simple to achieve. (Bonus: it’s a seamless transition into evening, should you opt to go that route.)

“Keep it tone on tone.”
One of the simplest ways to dip your toe into any trend is to keep the palette neutral. Start with a shape you’re comfortable with, like a wide-leg pant, and layer in a poplin shirt. This paneled/ruffled/asymmetrical knit seems far less intimidating when you’ve got two closet staples in the mix, but the overall look is still really cool.
