Dear Anne, Menswear-inspired pieces seem like a great idea for fall, but my fear is I’ll just end up looking frumpy. Any pointers? —Erin C.
Dear Erin, My best advice? Keep things classic. If you are a “normal” person aka non-supermodel, not of street-style-star status, menswear fabrics can turn bad—fast. Keep it simple, don’t go overboard with more than one piece per look, and save the experimentation with oversized shoulders for a rainy day. Below, a few of my favorite takes on the trend.
As it turns out, the 80s set the tone for all things American heritage prep: a his-for-her blazer, penny loafers, and yes, turtlenecks. Fittingly all three of those play well together here, especially when you throw in a pair of vintage-inspired denim. It’s relaxed, casual, and just a little bit collegiate.
Checkered Wool-Blend Coat
BARNEYS NEW YORK
Barneys New York, $275
A midi skirt in plaid done up in a heavy wool is perfect for crisp fall days (and later in winter months with tights and an ankle boot). The sculptural silhouette means that it looks especially pretty tucked in with a satin top, or slouchy-but-cool when worn with an oversized crewneck sweater and kitten heel.
MANOLO BLAHNIK BB
Barneys New York, $595
Plaid wool skirt
It’s a classic tale of masculine-meets-feminine when you pair a checkered trench, like this one from Calvin Klein, with an billowy chiffon dress—the mustard yellow feels particularly seasonally appropriate. To tie it together, a tough lace-up boot is a welcome contrast.

LouLou Lace-Up Suede
Sartorially speaking, there’s nothing that screams Faye Dunaway in Network quite like a pair of knee-high boots paired with a checked blazer. A classic, slightly oversize proportion lends a preppy touch to a prim midi skirt and ruffled blouse—the overall effect is a cool spin on workwear attire.
