Ask Anne: A Lightweight Jacket for Travel?
Dear Anne, I never know what kind of jacket to bring on vacation. Inevitably there is everything from sun to rain in the forecast, and that doesn’t even begin to cover the range of things I’ll be doing, plus airplanes tend to be so over air-conditioned. Any suggestions for something that’s easy, lightweight, and will go with other things I’ve packed in my bag?—Meg A.
Dear Meg, I follow two rules when it comes to travel jackets: It must go with everything in my suitcase and I am not allowed to stuff it into my already-stuffed carry-on. (I need to actually wear it on the plane.) Here are three styles for your next trip—each one is heavy-rotation-ready, whether you’ll be gone for a quick weekend or a weeklong work trip.
The Cropped Trench
In almost any situation, a cropped trench is a wardrobe linchpin—traveling is certainly no exception. A pair of slim-fitting sweats works for plane travel (and keep you firmly out of sloppy territory) when the other pieces you pair with it feel more polished—a simple poplin blouse, easy-to-slip-on/off boots, and a throw-everything-inside tote.

Consider a soft motorcycle jacket in dove grey—it’s a fresh alternative to basic black, particularly going into summer, and looks just as sharp with trainers and a hoodie while you’re in transit as it does layered over a floral dress in the evening.

A navy blazer and stripes is a fail-proof dressing combination because both pieces, when worn together are a no-brainer, and work just as well on their own. Solid leggings are easy for travel; I also like stripes paired with another print or a pair of shorts, and the blazer can be worn as a topper for evening. It’s what I call a packing win-win.
