Everything Is goopier in Texas:
Design Ideas from Our Austin Pop-Up

Twenty days. That’s how much time interior designer Sasha Adler had to transform four empty walls and a roof into the beautiful, inspired, welcoming store known as goop MRKT Austin, our latest retail pop-up. In less than three weeks, Adler laid down cool, sisal rugs; plugged in gorgeous, warm lighting; created cozy little nooks; and, in a playful little twist, stuck a bathtub right in the middle. The effect was stunning. So naturally we wanted to know how she pulled it off.

But time-chipped, naturally weathered antiques have a way of bringing gravitas to a room. “The pieces with age, history, and patina give the space roots,” says Adler, who added a bunch of antiques and vintage pieces, like this eighteenth-century mirror. “They are the perfect antidote to the fact that the space is a pop-up and there for only a short time.”

So she brought in a tree. A colossal, verdant wax-leaf ligustrum tree that’s an homage to Austin, “a city that really celebrates the outdoors,” she says. “Incorporating a tree felt like a way to connect the store to its surroundings and give the space roots.” Literally and otherwise. Adler then surrounded the tree with seating, creating a courtyard for people to relax in pre-, mid-, or post-shopping.

Adler designed the store to be “open and organized like a home,” giving people places to take a moment and relax. First there’s the seating in the entry courtyard. Then there’s the main room, anchored by a giant, plush Living Divani sofa that makes us want to lounge in the store—and never leave. And along the side wall, a freestanding Kohler bath tucked next to all our favorite clean, nontoxic skin care.

    Always have room for Reiki

“The space is extremely flexible,” says Adler. And that means the individual Living Divani sofa pieces can be reconfigured (they brilliantly come apart) to create room for the bevy of talks and workshops lined up for March. Yoga, Reiki, facials—the list goes on.
