Ask Anne: A Non-Boring Winter Coat?

Dear Anne, I’ve got the basics covered this winter in the coat department, but what I am really craving is something a bit more interesting—a pop of color, a playful silhouette, but I still need it to be warm. Any ideas? —Lisa L.
Dear Lisa, I personally love a strong outerwear choice. The great thing about bold outerwear is that it doesn’t have to be, well, loud. In fact, there are many ways to break out of your shell: It can mean a detail, whether it be a novelty printed jacket, a faux-fur collar, or shearling instead of wool. Here, three of my favorite styles for right now—proving even the most basic cold-weather staple is ripe for reinvention.
Skip a run-of-the-mill puffer for something that makes a bit more of a statement. This plaid down jacket is still super warm (think insulated goose down feathers for warmth) and easy to layer things under, but the palette—cream, pink and a pop of black—feels fresh. Keep the rest of your outfit simple (here, we play with shades of grey) and finish with a textured loafer.

This classic winter layering piece eases into fashion-forward territory when it’s done up as a aviator-style jacket in a pretty, goes-with-everything grey. (We like to treat it like a neutral.) Whether it’s left draped open or button-up, the overall effect is polished, making it a strong contender for a night out on the town.

This is truly an all-season coat (the faux-fur trim and the fleece lining can be easily removed) but as temperatures dip you’ll want to be as cozy as possible. The army green shade is universally flattering and will work with just about anything in your closet. And since we’re not one to turn down a masculine-meets-feminine pairing, a white semi-sheer midi dress and season-spanning ankle boot are totally on point.
