How Our Fashion Team Styles Their Favorite Denim
We’ve been seeking compelling silhouettes for our denim stacks—curved, straight, wide, flared—that can cure wardrobe fatigue. In the same way that getting a new sofa can spur a reconfiguration of the entire room, these styles inspired us to Tetris existing wardrobe pieces to create fresh combinations. If you transitioned away from skinny jeans and are still thrown by what shirt to wear with a slouchy fit, or if you have not worn shoes with jeans in two years and are looking for pairing inspiration: See how five members of our fashion team are approaching denim now.
Ali Pew
creative and editorial fashion director
“I love this curved, slouchy fit (the cotton is just stiff enough to hold the shape nicely), and the slightly two-tone wash along the side seams is just so good. These rounder silhouettes tend to work best paired with something somewhat relaxed on top (tuck it in to carve out a waist). Shoewise, a style with thicker soles, like these sandals, is good for balancing things out on the bottom—a heavy boot or chunky sneaker would work well, too.”

buying director, fashion and home
“The Kaplans are the antidote to basic jeans. If you’re experiencing pandemic-related wardrobe boredom like me, these pack a lot of punch. Thanks to the dramatic sweep of the wide flare, they’re ultraflattering and statement-making. What you wear on top is just gravy, and anything goes, but I highly recommend this tailored shirting set. Pop on your favorite gold, then slide (or clog, or mule) right out of the house.”

“The longer I work at goop, the wider my jeans get. I love how this pair is cut: fitted at the hips and baggy through the leg, falling straight down without flaring too much at the bottom. I’m only five-four, so they’re a bit long on me, but I like how they puddle over my favorite chunky loafers. Let me relay my favorite Ali Pew pro tip: If you’re not into the extra length, your tailor can easily shorten them—just ask them to add back the original hems so you preserve all the cool distressed details.”

“There’s this iconic photo of GP in the ’90s wearing jeans, a white tee, and a black leather blazer. This is the DNA of my whole closet. When it comes to getting dressed, I don’t want to have to think too much about it—that’s the beauty of having a uniform. These jeans fit into my wardrobe seamlessly. I love that they are high-waisted with just the right amount of stretch, which is great for running around on set.”

“I already own these in two other colors (if the jeans fit, right?). The subtle acid wash gives them an edge. And since the cut is already slim, pairing them with a formfitting top makes for a perfect day-to-night look—and forces me to branch out from my go-to puff sleeves. The ankle-skimming crop is a perfect companion with a pair of ballet flats (bonjour, French-girl style). And who doesn’t love Khaite’s iconic black-and-gold button?”
