Dear Anne, I’m in desperate need of a closet overhaul. Any suggestions on what to keep, donate or buy?—Julie B.
Dear Julie, Cleaning out your closet requires a willingness to be ruthless. My friends and I have dubbed the activity “Cutthroat Island”! The rule is if you haven’t worn it in over a year you must get rid of it.
January is the perfect time for a closet purge. Once you’ve made space both physically and mentally you’ll find new inspiration in building up a closet of things you’ll actually wear and will make you feel great. Some advice: Don’t feel bad about buying newer, updated versions of the basics you love and may already have in some form. Are you a striped tee girl? Try one in a new color combination. Do you wear pencil skirts? Update with a rugged, tie waist version. Here are three outfit ideas grounded in a few great closet workhorses that will take you through the year.
THE BLUE BUTTON DOWN
A blue button-down is one of those things that you truly can’t have enough of. This particular style offers up a prim, polished spin on a more masculine silhouette and the French cuffs and romantic ruffled collar make it unlike anything else in your closet. For those mornings you find yourself in a what-to-wear rut, pairing this shirt high-waisted wide-leg, a cozy cardigan layer, and simple sneakers is the way to go.

THE TAN OVERCOAT
It’s no secret we love a great day-to-night coat. This goop Label Crombie coat is an update to last year’s sellout style, done up in a goes-with-everything camel Loro Piana cashmere. This menswear-inspired piece looks just right with something a bit more girly—a winter-y white jean and embroidered top deliver in the sophistication department.

THE STRIPED LONG-SLEEVE TEE
As far as we’re concerned there’s no reason not to wear stripes 365 a year, and this second skin stripe top is as cool as it comes. The black-red-and-ivory motif is a twist on the classic navy-and-white marinière stripe, and still has the same goes-with-everything appeal: we like it paired with a high-waist belted skirt, as much as we do a pair of tried-and-true skinnies. For a bit of playful texture, layer with a printed scarf and socks in cooler temps.
