Keauhou Shopping Center, 78-6831 Alii Dr., Kailua-Kona
This local shop is everything you would want to find in an independent bookstore: Beach reads, literary heavyweights, a robust kids selection, plus tons on local culture. Opened by two friends who met at a bookclub in California, they keep the shop heavily programmed with everything from kids reading hours, to various book clubs, to author lectures and an in-house psychic who offers readings every Friday afternoon.
49 Kihapai St., Kailua
Settled in on a quiet Kailua street, this indie surf shop is home to a slew of small, design-focused men's brands like Saturdays, Apolis, Deus ex Machina, and Industry of all Nations. It’s primarily a clothing shop, though they always have a great selection of surf-inspired jewelry, art, and other knick-knacks to choose from. While most of the buy is menswear, there’s a healthy selection of bags, towels, and jewelry for women, and there are plenty of items, like Mollusk sweatshirts or Alex Mill tees, that are perfectly unisex. Their new outpost at the Surfjack Hotel has equally deep buys in men's and women's clothing.
4-1384 Kuhio Hwy., Kapaa
Shipwrecked has a good edit of women’s, men’s, and kid’s clothing, plus home decor, accessories, and jewelry. Pretty much everything you’d want to wear while in Hawaii (i.e. bikinis, one-pieces, cover-ups, cut-offs, crop tops, loose-fitting midi dresses, gladiator sandals, sunglasses) is here, along with plenty of gifts you’ll want to bring home.
