Cabbages and Roses
121-123 Sydney St., Chelsea
With its subtle florals, washed-out colors, antique furniture, and loose, billowy fashion line, Cabbages and Roses feels very English countryside (in the best possible way). Owner Christina Strutt's store started as a line of fabrics for interiors (and they remain the backbone of her business), and she brings the same vintage-inspired aesthetic to the homewares, accessories, and clothing in her cozy Chelsea boutique.
112 Old Church St., Chelsea
There's a good chance you would find De Gournay without a heads up from us, if only because it's nearly impossible to walk by their windows without getting drawn into their elegant showroom. They offer fabrics, furniture, plates, and custom design services, but De Gournay's true specialty is luxury hand-painted wallpapers in Chinoiserie patterns. Owner Claud Cecil Gurney seeks out painters who have been in the business for generations, and the wallpapers are indisputably the best in this increasingly rare trade.

From chairs to ottomans, couches to chaise lounges, everything here is upholstered, and handcrafted in the store's own workshops. A majority of their designs (many of which are George Smith's originals) are centuries old and very traditional, but when paired with the right fabrics, they can add a bit of classic elegance to a contemporary interior.

Terence Conran of Habitat fame is one of the—if not the—most prominent figures in British design, and his legendary shop is just one of his many legacies. His son Jasper is heir to his throne: He's recently overhauled the store's layout, style, and feel. Mixing furniture into realistic and enticing home-like vignettes, the shop is now a source of inspiration as much is it is the place to buy 20th-century design large and small. Along with all the Eames, Saarinens and van der Rohe's—not to mention, Donald Judd's furniture designs, for which Conran has the exclusive—the knick knacks, stationery, and design books are unparalleled, making it hard to walk out empty handed. There is also another location in Marylebone.
