This gorgeous vase is made from clay that was harvested by the artist, Hitoshi Kato, from the ground below his home. And see those ridge lines detailing the surface? They’re carved into the dry clay before the piece is fired—it’s a traditional decorative ceramics technique called shinogi, named for the thickest point of a samurai sword. Each vase is handcrafted, and the shapes vary—they’re sold separately and at random, which makes seeing which one you receive a (fun) surprise. Pro tip: Buy a few and group them together for a coordinated look that’s not too matchy-matchy.
