Gin Gimlet with Basil Simple Syrup
This twist on the classic gin gimlet might be better than the original.
for the basil simple syrup:
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
10 large leaves basil
for the cocktail:
2 ounces gin
1½ ounces lime juice
½ ounce basil simple syrup
small sprig basil, to garnish
1. To make the basil simple syrup, combine sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture up to a simmer over medium heat and cook until the sugar has dissolved. Add the basil leaves, turn off the heat, cover, and let the syrup infuse for at least 30 minutes.
2. To make the cocktail, combine the gin, lime juice, and basil simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a small sprig of basil.
