Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
100 Dorado Beach Dr., Dorado
This Puerto Rico outpost of Ritz-Carlton’s super opulent offshoot, Reserve, takes its glitzy past as Laurance S. Rockefeller’s passion project back in the 1960’s very seriously. The most vivid throwback is the five-bedroom Su Casa plantation which was painstakingly rehabilitated to its former glory—antique furniture, cigar veranda, plunge pool, and all. In lieu of cramped hotel rooms, guests can choose from indoor/outdoor suites and beachfront residences. The Spa Botánico’s enticing menu focuses on healing treatments, which can all be enjoyed on suspended treetop platforms. Among several on-site eateries, Positivo Sand Bar (come here for freshly caught sushi, traditional ceviche, and really good cocktails) and Mi Casa by José Andrés (try the asopao de langosta, a traditional Puerto Rican rice stew with spiny lobster) are a must.
