You don’t necessarily think “water” when you think “Texas”, but Lake Austin Spa Resort, set right along 21 miles of riverfront, is water center. It’s a retreat for people who come and stay for a long weekend or more, but at the same time, a place locals come often for everything from facials and pedicures to more serious treatments. Water is used in signature treatments—like the exceptional, pain-relieving myofascial release massage conducted in warm water—and in classes—from the Sunset Glow paddle class and waterfall hiking to floating meditation. But even just downtime spent lounging in a hammock along the river is restorative: You soak up negative ions that naturally boost serotonin simply standing on the shore. A new organic garden supplies the healthy, locavore spa kitchen (there are classes with chef Stephane Beaucamp as well as celebrity guest chefs). Come January, a new water taxi service will ferry guests to the spa by boat.
