    Rafael Pelayo, MD, is the author of How to Sleep and a clinical professor at Stanford University. His initial exposure to sleep medicine was as a medical student in the Bronx, pursuing child neurology as a pathway into sleep medicine. His clinical focus is the treatment of sleep disorders in children and adults. Pelayo has worked at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic since 1993, and he teaches and coauthored the textbook for Stanford’s popular undergraduate course Sleep and Dreams. Pelayo currently serves as the president of the California Sleep Society and the chair of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Political Action Committee as well as on the boards of the National Sleep Foundation and Start School Later. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Puerto Rico.
