The First Thing I Bought at goop
Recently, on Zoom, a few editors went down memory lane and recounted their first goop purchases. It was a good time, so we asked other staffers: “What did you buy when you joined goop?” Turns out, yes, we do buy everything Jean Godfrey-June says to, and yes, there is a bit of an initiation that happens when you come onboard. Almost everyone does a clean overhaul. And we sometimes do buy it because GP did first.

Schmidt’s YLANG-YLANG +
CALENDULA
DEODORANT goop, $10SHOP NOW
WELL ARMED
“My first purchase was Schmidt’s Ylang-Ylang + Calendula deodorant. It was the beginning of my natural deodorant journey. I was 1) inspired by another coworker who used to reapply her deodorant at her desk in our old office every day (mad respect), and 2) Jean Godfrey-June, who should really be getting kickbacks from the ylang-ylang lobby. It smelled so good. I did learn that I’m sensitive to baking soda, so I switched to Schmidt’s Jasmine Tea Sensitive Skin deodorant the next month. And now, for those still reading this riveting account, I’ve graduated to Corpus’s No. Green—which feels as luxurious as it looks.” —Jessie Geoffray, senior editor

Stasher STAND-UP BAG goop, $20SHOP NOW
IN THE BAG
“I started goop the same day we were told to work from home because of the pandemic, so my first purchase was right when we went into lockdown. I got a bunch of these Stasher bags and reusable paper towels, which is very sexy and exciting. I got the Stasher bags because I figured they’d be space savers in a small freezer or pantry: I used to keep a big box of spinach in the freezer to make smoothies, but now I stash it in these bags so it doesn’t take up too much real estate. I store frozen pasta in them too.” —Cait Moore, senior programming manager

RING TOSS
“It felt like goop initiation to get the Sarah Chloe signet ring, but then I sadly lost it to the ocean in Catalina.” —Alyssa Nelsen Geiger, senior creative copywriter

Birkenstock ARIZONA
BIRKENSTOCK goop, $100SHOP NOW
IF THE SHOE FITS
“My first goop order was white Birkenstocks. At the time, you would get to our weekly staff standup meeting and about 50 percent of everyone in the room had white Birks on. It was my first real adult job, and I didn’t really know what to wear, so I was like: This is what I wear now. I still love them.” —Kelly Martin, associate editor
“I, too, ordered the white Birks—a pair for me and a pair for my sister…that my teenage nieces have, of course, stolen from her. They are now family heirlooms.” —Caitlin O’Malley, food director

“I think I got Birkenstocks. Wait, that was my second order. My first purchase was a clean beauty haul: the peel pads, Beautycounter tinted moisturizer, concealer, and Olio E Osso balm. I use all of those things still and just ordered the Beautycounter again. I listened to and read every Ask Jean—Jean Godfrey-June can get me to buy anything—so I knew it was time to swap out my products. I’ve been into clean beauty ever since and haven’t looked back.” —Alexis Antoniadis, social media manager

MOISTURIZER goop, $60SHOP NOW
SLATHER UP
“The first purchase I made at goop.com was the Alpyn Beauty PlantGenius Melt Moisturizer after I read Jean’s description of the fluffy yet rich pink cream. I love it and have reordered it several times.” —Gerda Endemann, senior director of science and research

Cocofloss COCOFLOSS goop, $9SHOP NOW
GOOD GRIN
“On my first day, Kiki, our wellness director, and Kate, our executive editor, took me to lunch at the Brentwood Country Mart, and we stopped by goop Lab afterward. I picked up some Cocofloss. It is the best floss in the world (as Kiki has explained before).” —Simone Kitchens, senior features editor

Cinnamon
Projects SERIES 01
INCENSE BOX goop, $55SHOP NOW
SMOKIN’ ACES
“I bought a lot of home goods when I started. I was helping get the Brentwood store open at the time, and I ordered marble coasters, a Staub kettle, the famous vitruvi diffuser, wine glasses, and Cinnamon Projects incense. I still order the incense whenever I run out, and we probably get too much use out of the wine glasses. The diffuser is a nice constant fragrance, but incense can be mind-altering for the time it’s burning. These Japanese-style ones are really good.” —Nick Geller, technical operations manager

G. Label EMILY PAINTER
PANT goop, $104SHOP NOW
COOL CULOTTES
“A pair of G. Label painter pants, a pair of shoes, and a dry brush. I was delighted—and instantly felt like I fit in (I was a contractor at the time). The wider the leg, the goopier the gal, as they say. In fact, the first day I wore them, two coworkers told me I looked ‘so goopy.’ It was early fall, around October, and I got the white, which was a good balance for reintroducing ‘seasonal colors.’ That was three years ago, but last year I wore them to standup in the new office, and I swear GP was staring at me because she was jealous I was wearing them.” —Sarah Carr, associate editor
“That’s a good one. I think my first purchase were the G. Label carpenter pants. They looked comfy, and I hate restrictive clothes. My sister liked them so much that I ended up giving them to her.” —Diana Ryu, chief of staff

goop Beauty G.TOX HIMALAYAN SALT
SCALP SCRUB SHAMPOO goop, $42SHOP NOW
PASS THE SALT
“It was the G.Tox salt scrub shampoo that everyone, including my sister, raves about. My sister was obsessed with it, so she told me about it as soon as I started working here. I love it, and I’ve had it in my shower ever since. I have coarse, thick hair, and the scrub gets it clean without overdrying. And it smells great.” —Ethan LaCroix, director, product management

Spinelli Kilcollin PETUNIA RING goop, $2,300SHOP NOW
DEAD RINGER
“As luck would have it (or not have it), there was a Spinelli Kilcollin trunk show at our Brentwood Lab store during my first few weeks of working here. I was itching to use my goop discount, so…yeah, my first official purchase was this ring. Is that extra? For sure.” —Amanda Chung, junior creative copywriter

goop Beauty SCENTED CANDLE:
EDITION 02 – SHISO goop, $72SHOP NOW
LIGHT ME UP
“I just looked at my order history. I got a pair of Apiece Apart cream denim pants and the Edition 02 – Shiso candle. I love the candle. I never used to like candles or fragrance—I’d never purchased a candle because I thought they all smelled gross or fake. But I remember vividly when I first started at goop being in a meeting in GP’s office, and she lit it (it was the new one at the time), and I thought to myself that it was the best-smelling candle I had ever come across. It was subtle and refreshing, a nice addition to a space without overpowering it. I like to light it when I do a deep clean: The space instantly smells fresher. It’s almost gone, which is sad. I guess it’s time to reorder.” —Liza Green, senior manager, client services

Rahua HYDRATING
SHAMPOO &
CONDITIONER
SET goop, $70SHOP NOW
GOOD HEAD
“I’ve chronicled my hair-bleaching odyssey on goop.com before, but I didn’t mention that it was specifically Rahua that kick-started the clean hair journey after I fried my hair off. I remember that someone had taken a picture of the back of my head when I started working at goop, and I was livid. Rahua saved me, and I’ve given it as a gift to many friends who have also become obsessed. It smells so good and leaves my hair so bouncy, shiny, and healthy-looking.” —Samantha Saiyavongsa, associate editor
