4 Easy Ways to Maximize
Your Outdoor Space
In partnership with our friends at Homepolish
When Homepolish interior designer Jill Romine set the scene for the patio of goop MKRT Sag Harbor, her goal was incredibly ambitious: She wanted “every little space to bring a moment of joy.”
Those moments of joy translated into ivy spilling down the walls, impressively tall potted plants, a dining table lit by low-hanging rattan lights, and the faint scent of salt water and thyme in the air. It’s an atmosphere that invites you to stay and hang out for a little while—which was exactly the point.
This summer pop was the perfect place for Romine to bring her design magic to the East End of Long Island. We often look to Homepolish—a company that connects clients with skilled interior designers and contractors—for its ability to create places that we never want to leave. And the goop MKRT Sag Harbor patio is exactly that. (If you’re in the Hamptons, come visit us and attend one of our store events—starting with one-on-one design consultations with Homepolish. We’re open through September 15.)

Gather Round
The L-shaped patio is rather large, so Romine created separate moments within the space for talking, lounging, and dining. “We did communal seating at one large table to emphasize the length of the space,” says Romine, who designed two side areas with Hayneedle rocking chairs, which “will get a lot of use as the summer unfolds.”

A New Kind of
Green WallA wall of greenery is a statement. A wall of greenery with an inventive twist, like four goop x CB2 mirrors that “bounce light and reflect the view of the water,” is patio gold. This allows “people who are sitting a little bit farther back to capitalize on the views and the environment,” says Romine. A large CB2 dining table and David Sutherland dining chairs finish the look.

There’s no rule book mandating what outdoor design should be. Let indoor comforts, like plush seating, side tables, and “unexpected elements of art” guide the way. It’s imaginative ideas like these that the right designer can bring to a project. A good designer “can offer fresh perspective,” Romine says.
