Pediatrician Dr. Julie O'Toole founded Kartini Clinic, an inpatient, outpatient, and day treatment center, twenty years ago. The family-centered clinic treats adolescents and young adults, ages six to eighteen, who are dealing with eating disorders ranging from anorexia and bulimia to food phobias. The team of pediatricians, therapists, and counselors focuses on helping people restore their optimal weight to ensure healthy development. The center provides housing for patients' families through the local Ronald McDonald House.

One of those perfect, unexpected stores that stocks all the things you suddenly must have. Owner and former Parson’s grad/fashion designer Kara Green has created a truly modern, community-based shop. Themed around natural living and self-care, you’ll find an eclectic mix of artisanal, handcrafted goods, from rosewater facial mists to adaptogenic supplements to niche magazines–most of which are sourced from small businesses. Green also offers workshops–tarot card readings and weaving lessons, to name a few–aimed at building community connections.

Little Bird Bistro

In the PDX, this little bistro is known to be the spot for fun late-night dining and lazy Sunday lunches. The menu is always on point, with the butter poached cod salad and octopus terrine being two of our favorites. If you're feeling adventurous, go for the scotch egg.

Just like its drop-dead gorgeous premiere brick-and-mortar store in Venice Beach, the Parachute Portland boutique exemplifies the streamlined brand at its best. Jessica Helgerson Interior Design decorated the space with local artisans and a neutral palette to showcase the company's best-selling bedding, bath, and tabletop collections. The light, clean aesthetic is so welcoming, we can easily spend an entire afternoon here.
The Society Hotel
203 N.W. 3rd Ave., Downtown
Located in Portland's hip Old Town, this hotel-hostel hybrid exemplifies historic preservation at its best. Several years ago entrepreneurs Jonathan Cohen, Jessie Burke, Gabe Genauer, and Matt Siegel gave the neglected 1800s building–which was originally built to serve as a safe haven for sailors, then it became a Japanese-owned hotel–a new lease on life. They preserved the space in its entirety, ultimately creating a place that works for travelers and visitors of all backgrounds–and budgets (many of the rooms are either communal or share a bathroom). We love the downstairs café for its excellent coffee and beer and communal vibe.
Cloud City Ice Cream
4525 S.E. Woodstock Blvd., Woodstock
Bryan Gilbert made the commitment to revive his neighborhood ice cream shop by, literally signing the lease on it, the day after his mother passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. Today, he calls the business a tribute to her, featuring several flavors based on her famous desserts, like Bananas Foster, and her delicious cheesecake. The business also bears the mark of Gilbert's twin daughters—let's just say unicorns are a major source of inspiration.
2021 S.E. Clinton St., Northwest
Owner Chad Draizin moved to Portland for the first time for an internship at Portland Brewing, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Fifty Licks is famous for its ice cream cocktails. Draizin's on the tail-end of a major menu overhaul, so it'll be a few weeks before the cocktails are back in order, but there's plenty to enjoy while you wait: We love the Cuban coffee (which is sort of a Cuban version of an affogato) and the Chocolate Porter float (which is a 21+ root beer float). All of the ice cream is made French style, using real egg yolks, and its not too sweet, so the focus is on flavor.

If ‘weed-chic’ was going to happen anywhere, it’d be here. Set up in Southeast Portland (with a new location opening Downtown), Serra is a purveyor of lab-quality cannabis from esteemed growers like Prūf Cultivar, as well as edibles like cannabis-infused chocolate bars and gummies made locally by Wyld. You can also score artisan-made paraphernalia, like Hacienda Ware’s geometric ombré pipes and Summerland’s refined ceramic bongs, in addition to innovative “toking tech” like Quill’s steel vaporizer pen (to be filled with CO2 cannabis extract). If you’re in from out of state, don’t fret: Serra is compliant with Oregon’s legal medical and recreational marijuana program—in other words, this modern druggist is totally legit.
