Many New York City yoga classes are as packed as a rush-hour subway car, but cramped quarters aren’t the norm at Daya. The studio’s two rooms are spacious and high-ceilinged, and the classes are transformative. They teach a variety of styles—including Kripalu, Kundalini, vinyasa, and prana—and offer special classes, like the Candlelit Lunar Flow with live music (it’s stupendous to listen as you go through your poses) and Women’s Rejuvenation Circle, a guided meditation and “emotional check-in,” as Daya instructors say. The first early-morning class of the day is Get Up and Flow, which really gets you moving. (Incentive to get up early: One instructor always brings her adorable fluffy dog to class.)
Pickthorn

They take hair color very seriously at Pickthorn, where owner Chelsey Pickthorn has been known to mix twenty shades at a time to get the perfect flattering color. The salon specializes in impressively authentic highlights (imagine golden surfer hair and the sun-kissed flyaways of outdoorsy kids), which colorists paint on by hand, eschewing more traditional foil methods. The space is airy and sizable, but with only two chairs, the vibe is beautifully intimate. There’s no getting lost in the assembly line of blowouts that can be so frustrating at mega-salons, and the windows are hand-painted by local artists so that light streams through but pedestrians can’t peek in at the musicians and models who frequent the place—or witness your transformation, until you step outside.
Have & Meyer
103 Havemeyer St., Williamsburg
In a complete—and admittedly welcome—departure from the Scandinavian hip that dominates Williamsburg, Have & Meyer have replicated the experience of the North Italian wine bar, right down to the Milanese staff. This natural wine bar may be small, but the wine list, the menu, and the service are top-notch. The snacks hold up their end of the bargain, too: overflowing cheese and charcuterie boards, classic antipasti, and a few excellent pastas.
12 Chairs

Despite identifying as a primarily Israeli spot, the menu at 12 Chairs is fairly broad, meaning that you’ll always spot something you want. The Hummus is a must-order—smooth, tangy, garlicky and served in a giant bowl topped with even more chickpeas and a side of crunchy pita. On weekends, the chefs make Jachnun (a Yemenite bread spiked with complex date honey, cooked overnight, and served with a jammy boiled egg), the stuffed cabbage is available every day, as are the pillowy pelmeni—overall, really good comfort food that feels light and fresh. The wine selection is a thoughtful list of several Israeli labels amongst others. The place does pack out daily without fail, but the wait is never too long. COVID-19 update: Open for pickup, delivery, and outdoor dining. This is the closest you’ll come to SoCal in BK. The avocado toast, the breakfast sandwich, the quinoa bowl—they’re all here. There are also malted pancakes served with brown butter and seared mushrooms and ramp kimchi atop flaky grilled flatbread, so something for everyone. The interior is minimalist Scandinavian with blonde wood, pretty ceramics, and lots of greenery, but warmed up by a terra-cotta tile floor, chic marble-topped tables, and a wooden bar that wouldn’t look out of place in a ski chalet. There’s not a bad glass on the entire (all natural, all delicious) wine list. If you can’t handle the weekend crush, pick up the perfect flat white from the to-go hatch out front. A passion project of LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, the Four Horsemen is one of our favorite places for natural wine not just in New York but anywhere. Show up early for a seat at the bar or make a reservation ahead of time—this teeny spot packs out every night. The by-the-glass section is tightly edited, while the wine list itself is akin to a small leather-bound novel. The staff are really good about making suggestions if you don’t know where to begin. The food menu is short, concise, and unapologetic—they don’t do substitutions here, but you probably won’t want any. To warm up, split an order of the beurre-blanc-saturated carrots. Then get the pasta with Meyer lemon, bottarga, breadcrumbs, and parsley for yourself, and the budino for dessert. The good vibes are a testament to a loyal crowd of regulars who are comfortable in the space and enthusiastic about the food. Cooking nightly dinner at home is a fairly radical concept to many New Yorkers, but blessedly the Brooklyn Kitchen (with two locations, Williamsburg and Sunset Park) has made realistic home cooking its mission. The Williamsburg property is a renovated warehouse with a stunning loft kitchen and ample space for ambitious gourmands to command their own stations. Classes are themed and truly, there is something for everyone whether you want to master the art of French cooking (pick the Julia Child class), acquire the basics in knife skills 101, learn to butcher your own meat or just rustle up some quick pickles to perk up your work lunches al desko. Aside from being seriously practical, cooking classes are a fun change-up from the normal restaurant-dinner-and-a-drink date or post-work routine.

Home to our all-time favorite golden milk (it’s thick and rich, almost like hot chocolate, perfectly balanced...insane), this tiny shop also makes some of the most incredible aged-cashew cheese we’ve ever had. Everything Argentinian couple Veronica Schwartz and Pablo Castro make is vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free, from granola, tarts, and bon bons to the cheeses, plus they stock a an amazing selection of adaptogens from goop Shop favorite Sun Potion.
