The Ultimate Bath Detox

The Ultimate Bath Detox

The cliché about putting the oxygen mask on yourself first is a cliché because it has to be repeated so strenuously, and so often. Giving to others is nourishing, absolutely, but it is the moment of self-nourishment that enables all the rest: Before we can finish that work project, cut up whatever’s in the fridge and put it on a wood board for everyone else to eat (thank you Kitchen Healer for best advice ever), or even cross another present off of our to-buy lists—we need a minute (okay, 40 minutes) for ourselves. A bathtub and time are the primary ingredients, to which we’ve added some amazing plant-based, totally non-toxic, super-rejuvenating miracle products we love, all in service of pressing the pause button—and, as we emerge replenished, detoxified, moisturized, and even glowy, pressing the full reset. The active treatment time is 40 minutes or so, but set aside about an hour all told—it will feel (blissfully) much longer.

1. Dry brush While you fill up the tub, brush your skin. It feels absolutely incredible, and it stimulates all sorts of systems in the body. Even if it did nothing at all besides feel good, this step is totally worth it.

  • The Organic Pharmacy Skin Brushgoop, $15

This genius, long-handled natural-bristle brush allows you to thoroughly dry brush every part of your body—especially your back, which feels particularly amazing (and is uniquely hard-to-reach). It’s also the perfect balance of soft and firm, designed to gently exfoliate, support circulation, condition skin, and boost the lymphatic system. Brilliant for detoxing, and equally brilliant for everyday skin-smoothing and energy-generating support.

2. Turn your bath into a full-on treatment Dump all the wet-harvested salts, clays, and wild seaweed from this chic envelope into your tub, and follow the directions assiduously. You’ll emerge having successfully pressed “re-set”—and deeply hydrated all at once.

  • Pursoma Resurrection Bathgoop, $36

Pursoma bath soaks are like nothing you’ve ever tried: serious, serious detox. A true, full-body cleanse from the outside in, each mask is formulated to help detox the body from a different aspect of modern life. They will blow you away, we guarantee. In this one, wild French seaweed and organic algae nourish and hydrate dry and stressed skin, mineral-rich gray sea salt from France helps your body sweat, and natural montmorillonite clay supports detoxification. Super-moisturizing, remineralizing, mind-clearing, this is the ideal treatment for skin in need of major moisture and powerful detox.

3. Revivify skin as you soak To treat your face to the same detox/moisturize/renew action your body’s getting, mix this cinnamon-colored mask with your favorite face oil and let it sit for 20 minutes—conveniently, the same amount of time you need to stay in the Pursoma bath for maximum benefits.

  • Lilfox Cleopatra Restorative Milk + Honey Beauty Maskgoop, $88

Inspired by Cleopatra’s beauty rituals in ancient Egypt, this mask gently exfoliates with ingredients like mineral-rich French rose clay, white clay, pineapple, papaya, and rose-quartz gem powder; at the same time, it nourishes with ultra-hydrating coconut milk, honey, and superfruits camu camu and baobob. Combine the delicate powder with water—or your favorite face oil—to activate the ingredients, creating a silky mousse; leave on for 20 minutes for soft, plump, glowy-hydrated skin.

  • goop by Juice Beauty Enriching Face Oil goop, $110/ $98 with subscription

This nourishing, potent miracle oil sinks instantly into skin and starts to work. Made with a pure blend of organic oils, it leaves skin remarkably supple, soft, and glowing. It turbo-charges any moisturizer, but also hydrates beautifully on its own. It can even be patted on over makeup for a midday pick-me-up. The Enriching Face Oil is formulated with USDA-certified organic ingredients and contains approximately 99% total organic content.

4. After a good sweat, finish with more detox + moisture Once out of the Pursoma bath, you’re supposed to “rest and sweat” for 20 more minutes. Depending on how alert you are (those baths have the power turn a person into a temporary zombie), work some detoxifying oils into your skin, either before or, if need be, after the sweat phase.

  • The Organic Pharmacy Detox Body Oilgoop, $68

This invigorating body oil helps detoxify and reduce inflammation with juniper, grapefruit, and rosemary essential oils, improving microcirculation and deeply nourishing skin. Use alone, right after dry brushing, or you can actually apply it with a dry brush, working upwards from the feet in a circular motion, towards the heart for ultimate detoxification and de-puffing.
