In a year that’s so far included cohosting the Met Gala with Vogue, co-curating an Avedon show at the Gagosian Gallery with the Richard Avedon Foundation, and chasing after his two-year-old twins, Grace and Noah, New York Times–bestselling author, writer, and TV personality Derek Blasberg has barely had time to catch his breath. He and his partner, Nick Brown, are based in New York, but Blasberg travels often, all over the world, for meetings, fashion shows, and a dizzying variety of events and assignments that reflect his Renaissance-man-like career. “I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, in a world that was predigital,” he says. “From an early age, I knew I wanted to get out of the Midwest, travel the world, and be the sort of person who knows where the action is.”

So Blasberg’s perspective on grooming definitely takes travel into account, along with style and function. “After working in the fashion industry for more than 20 years, I can say with some authority I’ve refined my toiletry routine down to the best efficient bare essentials, both on the go and at home,” he says. “When I go to someone’s house and see thousands of lotions and potions and creams in their bathroom, I get intimidated. How do you know what to do when there are so many choices?”

Accordingly, he’s put together his first-ever goop guide: “These are my go-to choices for a totally clean, efficient, and mostly fragrance-free guide for guys. And gals, I guess,” he says. “My beauty routine is incredibly simple.”

    The Body Wash

    Nécessaire, goop, $25

“For my body, I love the Nécessaire bodywash.”

  • 3

    The Body Lotion

    Nécessaire, goop, $28

“I always think if I can smell a dude—even if they think they smell good—they’re wearing too much scent. So when I get out of the shower, next up is the unscented body lotion from Nécessaire. I’m obsessed with fragrance-free products.”

    The Rich Cream

    Augustinus Bader, goop, $290

“On my face, I use The Rich Cream by Augustinus Bader, which feels so good and nourishing when I smooth it on and leaves my skin supple.”

    Clean Nourishing Lip Balm

    goop Beauty, goop, $20

“On my lips, I use this. I really value the way that goop does all this testing around the chemicals in beauty products. Clean, clean, clean! I know that the word ‘clean’ means different things to different brands, but I trust Gwyneth.”

    OneBlade 360

    Philips Norelco, Philips, $37.96

“I haven’t had a clean shave since high school. The hardest part about keeping a beard is making it look effortlessly disheveled. When my beard gets unwieldy, I use the OneBlade shaver by Philips Norelco for occasional beard trimming. I’ve gone through a zillion trimmers and this is by far my favorite because it gets close—very exacting.”

    Theragun Mini 2.0

    Therabody, goop, $199

“Speaking of gadgets: A big pro tip for traveling is to bring this travel-size Theragun, especially for after a long bath when your muscles are warm and soft. Get in there and shake them out. Sometimes I use the Theragun when I’m on the plane, which can get me some weird looks. But whatever—don’t you feel like an airplane is the last place on earth where it’s polite to absolutely ignore everyone else?”

    Balls in the Air

goop Wellness, goop, $90/$75 with subscription

“As a new dad with twins—lord, help me!—I turn to goop every morning to help pick me up (and, see below, every evening to wind me down). Balls in the Air is the supplement I take with my morning English breakfast tea. (I go to Starbucks—I appreciate the uniformity of the baristas around the world.)”

“The Martini” Emotional Detox Bath Soak

    goop Beauty, goop, $40

“In the evening, especially when it’s been a long day, I like to draw a bath and pour in some of the Martini bath soak. I wish I could say that in the bath I listen to spa music and meditate, but often I’m on my phone and trying to clean out my inbox. I can’t sleep if there are any open emails in my inbox, which I know is pathological.”

    Be A Bag Washbag Large

    Anya Hindmarch, Anya Hindmarch, $410

“This Dopp kit by Anya Hindmarch was personalized with pics of my kids and my partner, Nick Brown. Before I was a dad, I had one that said ‘Derek’s Douchebag,’ but I’m much happier winding down on the road looking at my sweet kiddos now.”
