Cover-Worthy Beauty

Photographer Alexi Lubomirski—who happens to have shot GP on more than one occasion—is responsible for some of the world’s most iconic fashion covers, but his new book, Diverse Beauty, challenges any preconceived notion of what is cover-worthy. Born in England, Lubomirski spent part of his childhood in Botswana and a year traveling in Peru before he returned to the UK for his education and later apprenticed under photography legend, Mario Testino, in both London and Paris—all experiences that shaped the unique way that Lubomirski sees and portrays beauty.

The photography collection encapsulated in Diverse Beauty includes stunning images of women like sixty-eight-year-old beauty entrepreneur, Linda Rodin; models Hari Nef, Ashley Graham, Philomena Kwao; and actress Kerry Washington—alongside the women’s own self-titled captions. Diverse Beauty was in part inspired by the incredibly impactful speech that Lupita Nyong’o delivered at ESSENCE’s 2014 Black Women in Hollywood event (watch it here if you haven’t already), and Nyong’o has written a generous preface for the book. Like Nyong’o’s message, Lubomirski’s photographs are a reminder of how empowering it is to see a true spectrum of beauty represented in the world, as opposed to a sole standard. You can feel even better about purchasing a copy of the book knowing that all the proceeds are being donated to Concern Worldwide, a humanitarian organization that seeks to lift people out of poverty.
