Ask Jean: How Should I Deal With Hormonal Breakouts?

Dear Jean,

I’m in my early thirties and still suffer from hormonal breakouts on my chin (side note: I’ve been working with a homeopath to treat hormonal imbalance, I eat a clean diet, and am active, but like clockwork 1-3 deep-rooted little guys appear just a few days before menstruating). The breakouts typically only last a few days but the red marks linger…and linger… Is there any product or treatment or secret industry practice that you know of that effectively gets rid of the spots left behind? – R.S.

Anything that chemically exfoliates skin—from salicylic acids, to alpha-hydroxy acids, to papaya enzymes—will help get rids of the spots…a little bit quicker. The best is salicylic acid, because it also decreases inflammation (it’s the same compound as aspirin) and helps kill the bacteria that causes acne, or prescription retinoid acid. I’ve also found that clay can make a big difference in terms of speeding healing time overall.

As far as a secret industry practice, a dermatologist can use blue and red light therapies to decrease inflammation and speed healing—but going to the dermatologist once a month is not in most peoples’ schedules or budgets.

The best solution is to not get the breakouts in the first place; read our story on hormonal acne for some tips. And because it’s in such a specific spot, I’d treat just that spot, every day of the month. You could try something made with salicylic acid, or a blemish oil that’s made with a boatload of anti-inflammatory botanicals. It’s just critical to do precisely the same thing, every day. It may take several months of consistent treatment every day to see results.
