A Spring Refresh in Pink, Peach, and Gold
with Makeup Artist Gucci Westman
Even a fresh-faced no-makeup look benefits from a wash of skin-warming color, says legendary makeup artist Gucci Westman, founder of Westman Atelier: “Especially after this last winter, pinks and peaches feel uplifting and joyful.” Here, her easy tips for tweaking your look in the prettiest way for spring.
1
START WITH A CLEAN (REALLY MOISTURIZED) SLATE
-
Westman says that glowing, hydrated skin makes all the difference in the way you (and your makeup) look. “Buff off winter skin with some deeper exfoliation,” says Westman. “A few days a week, I massage goop Microderm into my skin to really make it luminous. I’m a big fan of anything that works without stripping my skin, and this delivers.”

“I put on a hydrating sheet mask, then massage any leftover serum from the mask deeper into my skin,” she says. “You can easily use your hands to stimulate the lymphatic system and release any tension in your face; a gua sha stone or facial roller is also easy to work with.”

“I know most people like to switch up their moisturizers after winter, but I stick to products that give my skin long-lasting hydration. I smooth on Tammy Fender’s Celestial Rose Crème as a last step in my skin routine—it’s mega moisture that sinks right in.”

SPRING-CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES
“Give all your makeup brushes a thorough cleansing,” says Westman. “A good brush—ours are made by one of the oldest brush makers in the world, Hakuhodo in Kumano, Japan, with cruelty-free nylon bristles and lacquered hardwood handles crafted of birch—can make all the difference in your application.”
-
Clean your brushes with gentle liquid soap. “Wet the brush with lukewarm water, then place a drop of soap in the palm of your hand,” says Westman. “Use your fingertips to gently massage the makeup or dirt out from the bristles. Rinse, then squeeze out any additional moisture. Reshape the brush head back into its original form and position the bristles over the sink so they can fully dry.”

WAKE UP YOUR SKIN WITH BRONZE AND PINK
-
Most skin tones are a little dull at this point in the season; Westman uses her Face Trace as an allover creamy bronzer. “It’s super easy,” she says. “Just dab it on cheeks, eyelids, along the bridge of your nose, forehead, and temples and then blend with your fingers.

Alternately, Westman uses her Lit Up stick: “It’s my secret weapon for waking up the skin,” she says. “Wear it under foundation for a super ethereal finish or glide it alone over cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, inner corners of the eyes, and the bridge of the nose to catch the light. It’s gorgeous on the eyelids, too, for a glossy eye, and it’s also really fun to layer under different lip colors—it gives a pretty, healthy sheen to the lips.”

After the bronzer or highlighter, Westman smooths on her Vital Skin Foundation Stick only where the skin needs it. “Sweep it under your eyes, upward at the outer corners, and spot-check any redness,” she says.

“For a healthy flush, dab Baby Cheeks (I love Petal or Poppet) along your cheekbones,” says Westman. “Besides creating a healthy flush on skin, Baby Cheeks is also great to pop onto your lips for extra fullness. And the shades are really fun on the eyelids, too.”

She also loves to layer Super Loaded Tinted Highlighter in Peau de Sante up along the cheekbones over Baby Cheeks. “The warm, peachy-pink, healthy-skin shade gives you an effortless glow,” she says. “Super Loaded reflects and bends with the light to give you the most radiant skin.” (And this new shade is only on goop.)

OR GO BIG ON PEACH AND GOLD
Depending on your skin tone (and favorite colors), Westman is loving peaches and golds for spring, too. “I like a luminous peach cheek,” she says. “Then you add similar tones at the eyes and lips: For eyes, brush the Bisou shade from the Rendez-Vous palette in the inner corners and again at the outer corners. Dab the golden-peach Nectar shade of Lit along the tops of your cheekbones and along the bridge of your nose. To finish, I love a soft coral like Nou Nou on lips.”
5
LAYER LIP SHADES
“Lip Suede is the ultimate mix-and-match palette,” says Westman. “I love combining the shades to create something special, then applying it to both my lips and the apples of my cheeks. You can also layer gloss over Lip Suede to create a juicy, saturated look. I like to pair similar tones together, like Chou Chou over Peony or Nana over Café Crème.”
6
ADD PINK TO A SIMPLE SMOKY EYE
“A glimmering rose lid creates a fresh spin on a smoky eye,” says Westman. “One of my favorite combinations is Chocolat from Les Jours on my lids with Baby Cheeks in Dou Dou dabbed over the top. The luminous brown and warm rose are a beautifully unexpected pairing. Top it off with super fluttery black lashes.”

UNEXPECTED MAKEUP TIP: TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY
Westman says the way you nurture the rest of your body shows up on your face. “I’ve recently been incorporating dry brushing into my routine, and I love how it helps slough off all the dead skin cells,” she says. “It’s a lovely ritual before taking a relaxing soak in the tub.”
