This fall, look for hot pink, cocoa brown, and pops of shine, says top makeup artist Jenn Streicher, whose Duchess beauty boutique in Bedford, New York, is one of the chicest places on the planet to learn about makeup, hair, and skin. (She also co-owns LA’s Striiike beauty studio with her two beauty boss sisters.)

It’s easy to imagine that a woman who regularly flies around the world doing red-carpet makeup for stars like Greta Gerwig and Emily Blunt might spend hours on her own makeup, but Streicher is the opposite: “I like to do my makeup in five minutes,” she says. This season, she’s inspired by ’90s textures, especially lip gloss. “It’s one of the best tricks to look instantly sophisticated,” she says. More takeaways: Bronzer for fall, and an easy smoky eye—for day.

FALL TREND 1: ’90S-CHIC GLOSSY LIPS

“This fall I’m feeling ’90s colors and textures—browns and pops of shine,” says Streicher, who likes the instantly polishing effect of the new Hydra-Barrier glosses in Spice, a sheer cocoa brown, and Fig, a moody plum. “They’re just an instant look,” she says, “without having to do much.”

FALL TREND 2: FLUFFY, IMPERFECT BROWS

This is not the season to go overboard on brow trimming, Streicher says. “Back-comb your brows with brow gel to rough them up. Then go back with the brush and shape them. I like to keep the hairs a little separated and pushed up,” she says. “The idea is bigger and bushier, like in that youthful way of children—the opposite of a skinny Lego brow that looks super manicured.” Streicher loves the clear brow gel from her brow-whisperer sister Kristie Streicher for a shape that really holds—while the tinted one from Kosas delivers amazing volume and lift as it nourishes with peptides.

FALL TREND 3: BRONZER FOR FALL

If you’re hesitant about wearing color, bronzer is a great place to start. “Layering bronzer with your foundation or your moisturizer is a little thing but looks so good,” Streicher says. She wears the gel bronzer from goop almost every day. “Because I wear sunscreen, my face is lighter than the rest of my body, so bronzer is the best way to give myself a little natural, even color. This one is such a genius product—no one makes a clean one this nice,” she says. “I smooth it on as a base layer, underneath ILIA Super Serum with SPF 40 if I’m going to be outside, or face cream.”

FALL TREND 4: HOT PINK BLUSH (MORE THAN YOU THINK)

“At first, blush can look bright, but then it settles and ‘too much’ ends up looking really nice,” says Streicher. “A hot-pink flush gives the impression that you were out in the sun all summer—I love this Venus shade, or if it’s too bold for you, try Afterglow—smooth it right at the apples of your cheeks and blend it diagonally up so that you get a little sculpting effect.”

FALL TREND 5: THE ALL-DAY SMOKY EYE

Anytime is great for a smoky eye, insists Streicher. “I’m trying to draw people away from the ‘this is for day, this is for night’ rubric.” She starts with liquid or cream shadow. “This evens out the lid and creates a nice base for the shadow you layer on after to adhere.” Powder, counterintuitively, really works for older skin. “The skin at the eye can get crepey, and the layer of powder helps create a smooth, even finish,” she says. Apply it starting at the lash line, tapping it over the lid with a brush for definition or with a finger for devil-may-care smudginess. “Smoke it out to cover the lid and out past the corners of your eyes as much or as little as you want,” says Streicher. “Either way, it’ll last all day.”

FALL TREND 6: LONG LASHES

“Long lashes are so flattering and face opening—they’re sort of the equivalent of doing a pop of color on your lips in the sense that they can be your look without doing much else,” says Streicher, who recommends ILIA to her clients who love drama, and Westman for a subtle lift.
