Date Night: A Laid-Back Routine for an Easy, Sexy Evening

Date nights used to be a lot less official for Los Angeles fashion/lifestyle blogger and founder Geri Hirsch, who makes even the most sophisticated outfits, recipes, and design ideas attainable in her hugely popular videos and blogs. But after the arrival of her daughter, Leo Gem, that dynamic shifted. “We were simply always out together,” says Hirsch of herself and her husband, Darin Friedman. “But now that we have a four-month-old, we’ve joined the ‘date night’ club.”

The two still keep the endeavor as simple as possible: “When we go out just the two of us, we pop over to Regen Projects or Kordansky for an art opening, or down the street to Sunset Tower or Sushi Park for dinner,” says Hirsch.

How much effort Hirsch puts into getting ready varies depending on the day—but the one constant is perfume. Always. “Perfume is a silent approach to personal style,” she says. “It’s your mark; it’s a memory.” Her newest date-night scent is Edition 04 – Orchard from goop. “The combination of the apricot and sandalwood is perfectly sweet, sexy, and unique,” she says. “Those are the three things I look for in a scent—I love it.”

Beyond spritzing on fragrance, Hirsch mixes things up, style-wise and routine-wise. “If I worked out, I shower, and if the timing is right with a nap for the bébé, I shower,” she says. “Otherwise, I’m happy to wash my face, toss something on, and pop out the door. There’s something a little more liberating about doing it that way. You don’t think too much about it, so you end up effortless, whether you intend to or not.”

Either way, she likes to put on music and pour herself a drink as she prepares to go out. “It’s more fun that way,” she says. “There’s always music on in our house, all day long. When I’m getting ready, I either go very chill with Bon Iver, Fleetwood Mac, and Dave Brubek, or get hyped with Drake, Beyoncé, and Swedish House Mafia.”

Hirsch is devoted to skin care, so her skin is usually in great shape. “I’m a clean beauty junkie with a thirst for a good hyaluronic acid serum and a bad mask habit,” she says, laughing. “If I have something important to go to, I always use goop Instant Facial the day before. I love May Lindstrom’s Honey Mud Mask and Tata Harper’s Resurfacing Mask, too.”

The night-of routine is simple: “I wash with One Love Organics Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil and roll out the inflammation with the Nurse Jamie Uplift Roller—it’s major key for under my eyes.”

“I love a good glow, so I schmeer RMS luminizer over my cheekbones, eyelids, nose, and Cupid’s bow. (Pro tip: I often use the RMS eye polish, because it’s thinner than the luminizer.) I bump up my brows with Lashfood, pop my eyes with Jillian Dempsey’s coal liner, and finish with a lip—usually a shade from Kosas (I rock them all).”

“When I’m lazy (let’s be honest, most of the time), I pull my hair back into a low bun and add a gold hoop or some other statement earring,” she says. “When I have time, I love a good blowout.”

Last, of course, comes a generous spritz of Orchard. “Perfume reminds me of my grandmother,” says Hirsch. “I remember watching her get dressed up when I was a little girl, and her last step was always a splash of her signature scent. I could smell her now just thinking about it. That’s what I love about perfume.”
