The Power of a Daily Dry-Brush (And How to Do It!)

A staff-wide devotion to dry-brushing at goop led us, perhaps inevitably, to develop a brush of our own. We first learned the practice in the context of a major detox, but once we discovered it, we found ourselves doing it every day to look and feel better on a more regular basis.

Dry brushing is one of those rare things that feels just as good when you do it yourself, and it’s incredibly easy to incorporate into your routine. Most experts recommend dry brushing in the morning, rather than before bed, because of its energizing qualities. Most of us do it right before we jump in the shower. Whatever your approach, it’s fantastic in conjunction with a sauna or steam, too.

To do it yourself, start at your feet and brush upward towards the heart. Similarly, when you start on your arms, begin at the hands and work your way up, again toward the heart. Use firm, small strokes, or work in a circular motion. For the stomach, brush in a circular, counterclockwise pattern. Harsh exfoliation is never the point; be sure not to press too hard.

We designed our brush to fit easily in the curve in your hand, to make applying the right amount of pressure to sweep away dead skin cells, improve the appearance of skin, and feel good all over as easy as possible. The bristles, made of sisal fibers from the agave plant, are soft enough to feel massage-like when they graze skin, yet firm enough to really work.
