Day-Off Rituals

In partnership with our friends at Advertisement

We work pretty hard at goop. So weekends are a really important time to rebalance, reset, and turn off a bit. The three goop staffers here—wellness director Kiki Koroshetz (above), editor in chief Danielle Pergament, and director of content operations Diana Ryu—spend their off-duty hours relaxing and preparing for the week ahead with some great, nourishing, every-Sunday traditions. (Spoiler alert: workout, farmers’ market, serious skin care, repeat.)

My husband jokes that I turn into a pumpkin if I’m caught out after 4 p.m. on a Sunday. What can I say? I just like to be at home on Sundays. If I don’t get my Sunday routine in, somehow my whole week feels thrown off before I’ve even stepped into the office on Monday.
My goals for Sunday start with a run or a gym class, followed by a long steam. I like to hang at the beach afterward or walk around the farmers’ market on Main Street in Santa Monica. I get breakfast at one of the farmers’ market stalls and pick up some vegetables for the week plus flowers for the apartment. Back at home, I prep the week’s salad toppings in the most basic way possible—carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes roasted in the oven—and I boil some beets and frozen vegetables.

  • While the laundry is going, I get into my beauty routine. There are a handful of products I use every day, and then there are the Sunday ones: In the shower, I use the G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub Shampoo. It has a whipped texture, and the pink salt works as an exfoliant as you rub it into your scalp. It’s not like any shampoo I’ve used before—and it lathers more than any other clean shampoo I’ve tried.
Out of the shower, I smooth on Burt’s Bees Sensitive Eye Cream. It’s perfect for me because my eyes are fair and pretty sensitive, so I have to watch what I use around them. And it feels so lightweight and soothing when you pat it on.

  • Then I’m ready to get into bed and read. Right now, I’m really into Susan Choi’s new novel, Trust Exercises, which begins at a competitive, quirky performing arts high school in a 1980s American suburb, where two freshmen are falling in love. The writing is really sharp and the story messes with your idea of what’s true and what’s false about the characters.

  • My day always starts with a Bikram yoga class—I’ve been addicted for years. I’m sure I should probably branch out and try other forms of exercise, but I can’t give it up. It’s my peace, my quiet, my satisfyingly sweaty ninety minutes that make me feel, even by 9 a.m., that it’s going to be a good day.

The weekend is the only time I have time to make my smoothie (I’m still searching for a good smoothie bar in LA—nothing compares to Juice Press). My winning recipe (apple, frozen banana, coconut water, spinach, lemon juice, ginger, sometimes dates) is usually snaked by my kids, so I wind up making a few.

  • Weather permitting—and it’s always permitting in Southern California—we go on a morning hike, then hit the farmers’ market. We’re new to LA, so part of our Sunday is always given to exploring our new city, often by visiting a museum or two. The day usually ends with my husband cooking a feast from one of GP’s cookbooks. Lately he’s been into The Clean Plate, which the kids and I have been loving. He’s a great cook, but not a neat one. Here’s hoping GP’s next cookbook is called The Clean Kitchen or maybe The Clean Countertops.

  • Sunday evening is my exfoliating extravaganza. While my husband puts the kids to bed, I start my skin-care ritual—the idea of not rushing is such a luxury. I wash off the day (the “day” is a lot less gritty now that we don’t live in Brooklyn) with goop Luminous Melting Cleanser. I follow with goop Instant Facial, which I leave on until it tingles and I’m convinced I look

  • sixteen again. Then I rinse and follow it with Burt’s Bees Sensitive Skin Night Cream. I have horribly sensitive skin—it reacts to weather, food, climate, mean people, anything. The night cream also goes on like nothing—totally weightless. And my skin just feels moisturized without feeling the moisturizer.

Sundays are sacred. I sleep in, am slow to start, and do my darndest not to schedule anything for that day. It’s the one day a week I really show up for myself in a meaningful way without any guilt. I get out of bed around 9 a.m. and start my morning with oil pulling followed by two huge mugs of warm water with lemon—this ritual is as important to me as coffee is to other people. I get dressed: I’ve been basing my purchases on comfort level, and right now, the Jane Linen Mini Dress from Sleeper is where it’s at—it’s oversize in all the right places and looks good with sneakers.

  • I live downtown, so it’s loud and bustling through the week, but Sundays are blissfully quiet, and I relish that. I get my favorite matcha latte at Maru—the space is white and minimal, and I like to sit and people-watch or scroll through my Instagram feed. I’m nuts about the collections feature, and I mood-board everything.

I do intermittent fasting, so by noon I’m ready to eat! I like the miso bowl at Honey Hi. I’ve been there many times, but I’ve never tried anything else on the menu—it’s that good.

The rest of the day I spend at home watching way too much Netflix, doing my laundry, and starting my wind-down to a 9 p.m. bedtime. I never realized the power of a hot bath until I tried G.Nite. I never, ever toss and turn if I spend twenty minutes in this stuff before going to bed. It makes me feel like I’m shedding my past week and starting anew. Around 8:30, I pop a Knock Me Out soft chew. Over and…out.
