Clean Beauty Swaps for Your Gym Bag
Make yourself feel beautiful at the end of any workout and you seriously reinforce the whole exercise experience, so you’re significantly more likely to do it again (soon). Come unarmed to most gyms, though, and the stripping shampoo and thin conditioner in the showers can leave you feeling dried out and less than glamorous. A bag packed with clean, nontoxic not-just-essentials (a gorgeous-smelling cream that doubles as perfume, for instance, or a mascara that opens up your eyes and makes you look fantastic) is key.
Here, our suggestions (feel free to improvise), arranged into a bit of a routine:
Straight out of the shower, or simply post-workout, smooth on face oil, to give it time to sink in for optimum glow.
goop by Juice Beauty Enriching Face Oilgoop, $110
This nourishing, potent miracle oil sinks instantly into skin and starts to work. Made with a pure blend of organic oils, it leaves skin remarkably supple, soft, and glowing. It turbo-charges any moisturizer, but also hydrates beautifully on its own. It can even be patted on over makeup for a midday pick-me-up. The Enriching Face Oil is formulated with USDA-certified organic ingredients and contains approximately 99% total organic content.
Scented body cream makes you feel and smell amazing; this one comes in an easy tube and is just—pure heaven.
Fresh, nontoxic deodorant that really works (we love both the ylang ylang and the lime scents) makes a huge difference instantly and long-term.
Schmidt’s Ylang-Ylang + Calendula Deodorantgoop, $10
This will blow your mind in terms of odor and even wetness control (though it is not technically an antiperspirant). Made with plantbased powder instead of aluminum (arrowroot, baking soda) it absorbs quickly and glides on like silk (thanks to coconut oil, candellia wax, vitamin E, and shea butter). Essential oils stop odors from forming in the first place, rather than trying to mask odor with fragrance; it’s completely vegan, deeply skin-soothing and wildly effective—the faint scent of ylang ylang and calendula is gorgeous.
Dry shampoo gives just about any hair type great texture, plus it absorbs sweat and oil.
Alder New York Organic Natural Dry Shampoogoop, $27
This clean, USDA-certified organic dry shampoo powder is the kind you use sparingly, so one of these bottles lasts a long time. Not just a cleanser but a texturizer, apply this blend of refreshing eucalyptus, cleansing clay minerals, and absorbent, volume-boosting rice powder and horsetail powder by tapping a bit into the palm of your hands; then, using your fingers, comb it through at the roots, and use a brush to gently dust off any excess.
Spritz some leave-in conditioner into your palms and smooth over your hair lightly to dispel frizz and leave a little shine.
Lavett & Chin Leave On Conditionergoop, $32
For the healthiest shine, smoothed flyaways, and serious protection from heat-styling, wind, water, and sun, this color-safe leave-in conditioner is brilliant to use every day for all over better-looking, happier hair. Made with a rich infusion of active botanicals, from rosemary, lavender, and hibiscus to sweet-almond, ginger-root oil, and clove-bud oils, it’s lightweight, sprays in, and leaves hair instantly more manageable. The ultra-hydrating formulas smells subtly of ginger and clove; the results, once hair is dry, are serious bounce, major gleam, and smoothing, strengthening protection.
For more serious styling—from correcting an errant curl to adding major gleam, this balm is indispensable.
Reverie Rake Styling Balmgoop, $36
Use this shine-enhancing, style-rejuvenating balm on wet or dry hair—it nourishes and conditions as it gives light support and major bounce. Rich with botanicals and essential oils from rose and frankincense to vanilla, balsam, and ylang ylang, the antioxidant formula protects color and softens hair with mango nut butter and pomegranate seed oil. Whether your hair is long or short, this is the ultimate do-it-all balm to add soft hold in wet hair or to smooth frizz or revivify a whole look in dry hair.
Protect your skin (and seal in moisture from the oil) with easy, translucent, mineral SPF 30 that glides on in seconds and comes in a brilliant little tube.
Coola Unscented Matte Face Tint SPF 30goop, $36
Coola’s Matte Tint SPF 30 has the freakiest (and coolest) feel ever: It goes on like foam dust, leaving nary a trace behind. It has a very sheer universal tint and matte finish that hides imperfections and evens skin tone, too, meaning it’s kind of magic in a bottle.
When your skin is glowy from exercise, you barely need makeup. If you want to look especially amazing, though, add this sheer bright pink to your lips and cheeks.
Olio E Osso Balmgoop, $28
This citrusy, super-moisturizing tinted lip/cheek balm delivers all the cushy hydration of the original No. 1 Balm, with the addition of the most flattering-to-all-skin-types sheer pigment out there, period. It’s the sort of your-lips-but-better color that brightens up your whole face, yet doesn’t read as “lipstick” or even “gloss”—just all-natural prettiness, pure and simple. Bonus: The stick fits the shape of your lips perfectly, so it feels especially fantastic going on.
Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Precision Eye Pencilgoop, $20
Deeply pigmented, rich, and creamy, this soft pencil defines with incredible precision and blends effortlessly, making the perfect cat-eye, smoky eye, or rocker-chic drama incredibly easy. Made with pure, intense plant pigments, it’s brilliant day or night, no matter what look you’re going for. No sharpening required: simply twist up to reveal more (intense, ultra-flattering) color.
Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Ultra-Natural Mascaragoop, $22
You won’t believe this mascara is as clean, natural, and organic as it is: The intense pigment, high shine, and serious volume-building capability rivals that of any conventional mascara. Plus, it leaves lashes lush, long, and feathery-soft without the toxic chemicals commonly used in conventional mascara; the formula is ultra-smooth and glides right on. GP’s personal tip: Smooth on one coat, wait a few seconds for it to dry, then build color and length with a second coat for a look that instantly wakes up your whole face.
Unless you’re the most die-hard foundation user, you really really only need concealer after working out—exercise makes your skin so beautiful, you don’t want to hide it. Cover only trouble spots, so your glowing-from-a-workout skin shines through.
