Ask Jean:

Nontoxic Ways
to Get Shiny,
Healthy Hair

Ask Jean

We want to answer your most pressing questions—or, you know, just the things that you’re curious about. Please keep them coming to: [email protected] Below, a q for our beauty director, Jean Godfrey-June.

Dear Jean, I want my hair to be soft, shiny, and healthy—the way it looked when I used my conventional shampoo and conditioner (before I understood how toxic they were). I also want to love how my hair products smell (again, the way I used to) and (this is probably too much to ask) how they look. I want it all for my hair! Is that possible with clean beauty? —Amy O.

  • Dear Amy, Clean hair care has taken a while to catch up to the rest of clean beauty. But there is now a lot to love.

I believe (as perhaps you do, since you mention them) that shampoo and conditioner are the most important hair products, by far. There is a new clean and nontoxic, all-organic shampoo (and a conditioner) that I truly cannot get enough of, that leaves my hair looking and feeling its very, very (even compared to conventional) best. It’s what I reach for on the day that I must look as good as I can possibly look. Both the shampoo and conditioner come in gigantic, chic-as-hell pump bottles, and they both smell—as promised—precisely how I imagine a garden of earthly delights might smell.

  • My enchantment with Sangre de Fruta is longstanding; if you have not tried the magical whipped body cream (Vetiver & Fleur!

Or the faintly salty Lavender by the Sea!), you are missing out on a super moisturizing, sense-enlivening delight. We often talk about the intangible benefits of natural ingredients at goop: It’s not just that they’re nontoxic but that extracts and oils from actual, living plants can affect how we feel on so many levels. Sangre de Fruta’s exquisitely crafted formulas are some of the best examples of that phenomenon: “Paying attention to scent and all the senses is a meditation to me,” says the former-fashion-exec founder, Allison Audrey Weldon. The new shampoo and conditioner are made with every fantastic plant oil, essential and otherwise, under the sun. The same shine-inducing, cleansing-and-super-moisturizing-all-at-once formulas come in different scents, all of them fantastic, but it is the Garden of Earthly Delights that I personally cannot live without. The label calls out sandalwood and bergamot, but the scent is so beautifully complex that if you’re looking for this note or that, you won’t really find it. It’s the Garden of Earthly Delights! It makes me feel like the sexy, confident, natural inhabitant of the world. And it makes my hair look great.

Also: We live in a garden of earthly delights—even as we insist on polluting and poisoning it—and I love a gorgeous bottle in my shower reminding me of that fact.
