Are you so effing tired? So is… gwyneth Founder, 44
No matter how much sleep I get, I still feel exhausted.
A number of us at goop (GP included) have long been searching for the answer to this question—why are we so effing tired? Not that we’re alone in the pursuit by any means. We hear this same question asked in so many ways from friends, family members, and readers: Regardless of how much sleep we get, why do we still feel so crappy? And, most importantly, what can we do about it?
This protocol has been a long time in the making, with the preeminent health advisor we’ve relied on since the beginning of goop: Dr. Alejandro Junger, founder of the detox gold standard, Clean Program. Forever ahead of the curve, Dr. Junger’s expertise on the oft-misunderstood energy drain known as adrenal fatigue was invaluable to engineering a vitamin/supplement regimen that could help to actually re-balance the pervasively, perpetually overtaxed system. (As was his keen understanding of Eastern medicine—many of the selected ingredients were sourced from ancient Ayurveda.)shop this vitamin regimen
THE WHY AM I SO EFFING TIRED FOOD PLAN
The best way for pretty much anyone to reset their system is with a detox, and if you’re looking for one in kit form, Dr. Junger’s 21-Day Clean Program is pretty incredible. Outside of a set detox, the closer we can stick to Junger’s elimination guidelines at as many meals as we can manage, the better we feel (and look). To make the Effing Tired regimen all the more potent, and to restore your adrenals, the big keys to avoid—like caffeine—might seem a little tough to swallow at first, but really worth it for most of us results-wise.
Foods to eat:
- Plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Lean proteins such as chicken, turkey, lamb, and wild game
- Sardines, anchovies, and cold ocean fish such as salmon, cod, halibut, and tuna
- Legumes such as lentils, split peas, and all beans except edamame
- Gluten-free grains such as millet, quinoa, and brown rice
Foods to avoid:
- Processed foods
RECIPES TO ROTATE IN
This super simple chia pudding recipe can be dressed up with whatever you like. We love it with toasted coconut, toasted hazelnuts, and fresh strawberries.
GP’s Morning “Smoothie”
Gwyneth drinks one of these every morning, whether or not she’s detoxing. Choose your Moon Juice moon dust depending on what the day ahead holds.
Detox Tostada Salad with Cilantro Cashew Dressing
There are a lot of components to this salad, but they’re all pretty easy to make and the end result is worth it.
Detox Niçoise Salad
Nothing beats a classic Niçoise—you won’t miss the potatoes when you’ve got creamy avocado in the mix.
Kitchen Sink Thai Fried Rice
A perfect Friday night meal, you can throw “everything but the kitchen sink” (meaning whatever leftover veggies you happen to have in the fridge) in here.
Soba Noodle Salad with Miso Dressing
This hearty salad makes a perfect filling lunch. If you’re detoxing, be sure to buy soba made with 100% buckwheat flour and feel free to dress it up.
Detox Granola Bars
The perfect snack while detoxing, these granola bars offer healthy fats from nuts and seeds and just enough sweetness.
These raw, three-ingredient truffles (from our GOOP CLEAN BEAUTY book) are the perfect bite to satisfy your detoxing sweet tooth.
MEET DR. ALEJANDRO JUNGER
Founder of the Clean Program and bestselling author of Clean (among other essential health manuals), LA-based cardiologist Alejandro Junger, M.D. graduated from medical school in Uruguay, where he was born. He completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at NYU Downtown Hospital and a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases at Lenox Hill Hospital before studying eastern medicine in India.
Why he developed the protocol
This regimen is designed for people with adrenal exhaustion, or adrenal fatigue—a term that is not commonly used or even recognized by most modern medicine doctors outside of extreme cases. It affects an epidemic-level proportion of people and is usually confused with other conditions. The most common symptoms are: physical and mental exhaustion, difficulty sleeping, weight gain and difficulty losing weight, bad digestion, constipation, irregular periods, frequent colds and other infections, and the worsening of individual underlying medical problems.Read More
