The Making of SF’s goop MRKT—Plus, a Party!
For our fifth installment of goop MRKT (see our full roster of events, here), we set our hearts on San Francisco—specifically, one of the city’s most iconic architectural marvels, the Frank Lloyd Wright building at 140 Maiden Lane. The space was built in 1948 to house the V.C. Morris Gift Shop, which sold fine china, crystal, and sterling silver tabletop objects—and then it went through various incarnations, including a clothing store called Helga Howie and most recently, Xanadu Gallery of Asian Art and Artifacts. However, several years of vacancy left the interior and its Guggenheim-esque spiral ramp in deep disrepair before famed designer Steven Volpe stepped in to bring it back to its former glory for goop MRKT. Over the course of a month (impressive, we know), Volpe and his team referenced archival images for inspiration to painstakingly resurrect the original built-in furniture and lighting fixtures. In addition to bringing in gorgeous oversized candlesticks as an homage to the original V.C. Morris Shop, Volpe assembled a roster of local artists and creators to help make the space truly unique to San Francisco: William Stout Architectural Books curated an incredible reading nook, Flora Grubb Gardens brought the original planters back to life, MARCH outfitted a dream kitchen to accommodate the It’s All Easy Cookbook Shop, and many more contributed to make the space what it is now. Come by to see it IRL and say hi, we’re posting up May 5th through the 22nd.
We are forever grateful to: Steven Volpe & Max Bobinski
